Notice Regarding DSC-W170 Digital Still Cameras

Sony has recently discovered that some DSC-W170 Cyber-shot® digital still cameras may experience peeling of the metal plating on the part of the case surrounding the lens, which could result in a slight prick to the user’s hand.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and thank you for your understanding.
Symptom and Cause
With certain DSC-W170 cameras, small particles of the metal plating in the affected area may peel away from the part of the camera case surrounding the lens. It is possible that these particles could prick a user’s hand.
A limited number of DSC-W170 cameras may have areas of metal plating on the case surrounding the lens that is thin. This thin metal plating combined with the grooved surface design may allow small particles of metal to peel off.
This issue affects only certain DSC-W170 model Cyber-shot digital still cameras within the following serial number ranges:
Body Colour RED: 7350151 – 7366800
Body Colour GOLD: 7350001 – 7363700
Body Colour BLACK: 7350251 – 7366750
Body Colour SILVER: not affected
The serial number and model number are located on the sticker attached to the bottom of the camera
As a part of our commitment to quality, for any customer in Canada whose digital still camera is listed above as one of the affected models, Sony of Canada Ltd. (“Sony Canada”) will replace the affected part of the case at no charge.
To obtain this service, you must fill out a claim form and mail it or fax it to Sony Canada. Alternatively, you may drop off your product at a SONY authorized service facility in Canada. If you have previously paid for an out-of-warranty replacement of the affected part of the casing on your camera, Sony Canada will refund you the cost of parts and labour which you paid to replace the part. Please use the claim form to request your refund. In order for your refund to be processed, you must enclose a copy of your service receipt/workorder for the repair.
For all other issues, the terms and conditions of the manufacturer’s warranty applicable to the product will apply.
This offer is available only to end-user customers in Canada who purchased their affected product at retail, and is not transferable. For customers currently under a 3rd party extended warranty or service contract, please contact your third party service provider directly. This offer is not available to providers, obligors, underwriters, or administrators of performance service plans, buyer protection plans, or other warranty or extended warranty programs. This offer is not part of the Sony limited warranty or Sony Care extended warranty plan.
