Raiders of the Lost Ark Animation

Mon December 19, 2011

From covertoperatives

The first six minutes opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark is arguably the best of any movie. I remember way back when a few university friends decided to go watch the movie but one of them dismissed it as probably a boring movie. We dragged him along and he was at the edge of his seat from the opening scene till the end of the movie. The very next day, he went to see it again!

Or experiment with one-of-a-kind video-editing features including lens corrections and the ability to apply hardware-accelerated filter effects with the freely available Pixel Bender plug-in.

NASA Hubble Telescope Spies Space Snow Angel

Fri December 16, 2011

It’s in our Milky Way Galaxy and looks like a snow angel in deep space. The Hubble Telescope peered about 2,000 light-years away in the direction of the constellation of Cygnus (The Swan) and located the S106 nebula in a relatively isolated part of the galaxy. The nebula’s vast clouds of gas resemble outstretched wings, and hence the “snow angel” reference.

Photographing Light with a Trillion FPS Camera

Wed December 14, 2011

From cameraculturegroup

How do you capture an image of a photon? It doesn’t make sense really since photons are the stuff light is made of and they are what illuminate objects and reflect back into our eyes so that we can see. So what would you use to capture an image of a photon — or light? We see objects that reflect light, but what does light itself look like?

MIT researchers have used a special camera called a streak camera that operates at a whooping trillion frames per second to visualize light. Aside from that, we don’t understand zilch.
