Nancy McCabe‘s typographic map uses uses names of oceans, countries and cities to define a country’s boundary lines. It is pricey at around $150 (Etsy), but it’s a beauty.
These maps by Axis Maps are amazing, using nothing but the type itself to draw coastlines, streets, highways, parks and other physical features of a city. Thousands of carefully placed words with the right type define the boundaries, roads and features of the city, a process that literally takes hundreds of hours for each map. You can order (for $30 each map) a high quality poster-sized print of Boston, Chicago or San Francisco, and they are currently working on maps of New York (Manhattan) and Washington, D.C.
