Last year, Panasonic developed an industrial sensor, the 3D LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), which will serve as the “eyes” for autonomous mobile robots giving them the wide angle of view they need.
- LiDAR with a wide measuring range is optimal to serve as “eyes” for autonomous mobile robots.
- LiDAR measures distance based on the time it takes for the light of Laser to bounce back from the object to the Photo Detector.

Chiba, Japan – Panasonic Corporation is taking part in the CPS/IoT Exhibition, “CEATEC JAPAN 2018,” which is being held in Makuhari Messe (Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture) from October 16 to 19.
Panasonic is showcasing innovations that “Visualize the invisible.” These solutions utilizing sensing and device technologies place people and society first. An experiential event, the “Graphic Facilitation Workshops” are also being held within the booth to foster open innovation through dialogue with visitors and to develop new businesses.
Advanced sensing solutions
Innovations that “Visualize the invisible”: Panasonic will propose people-centric, society-centric solutions that utilize sensing technologies.
These solutions understand people and help create a comfortable every-day life experience.
- Pressure-sensitive sensors
These sheet-type sensors will measure pressure distribution and detect people’s condition from the changes in their posture and center of gravity.
- Odor sensors
These sensors measure the odor of skin and breath to analyze people’s condition.
- Technology that estimates people’s condition
Using cameras and heat imaging sensors this technology will subtly analyze and assess people’s condition.
With spatial sensing, Panasonic will provide safety and security by detecting any situation under any condition be it darkness, long-distance, or adverse weather.
This senses peripheral information essential to smart mobility and autonomous control.
- Long-range Imaging-LiDAR
This sophisticated long-range imaging sensor makes small obstacles far away visible.
- 3D positioning millimeter wave radar
Even in low visibility conditions such as snow and fog this radar makes the surrounding area “visible” as a 3D image.
These sensors detect movement of various objects to help improve productivity and create new services.
- High precision positioning and traffic flow analysis system
This system records in real-time the locations of people and objects within a facility and statistically analyzes the gathered data.
- Location estimation wireless platform
This platform provides a new service by using location data gathered wirelessly.
[Technology seminars and the “Graphic Facilitation Workshops”]
Technology seminars and the “Graphic Facilitation Workshops” were held in the seminar space and communication space within the booth. Panasonic hopes to encourage open innovation through dialogue with visitors.
Proof of concept experiment held for the “entrance/exit security & office visualization system using facial recognition technologies”
From October 16 to 19, 2018 Panasonic is conducting a proof of concept experiment for the “entrance/exit security & office visualization system” (working name “KPAS”) using deep learning and facial recognition technologies at the press center for CEATEC JAPAN 2018 being held at Makuhari Messe.
Traditionally members of the media needed press badges to get in and out of the CEATEC JAPAN press center, but during this experiment, once members of the media register their facial image and business card at the registration desk, they can go in and out using facial recognition. Badges become unnecessary and unauthorized entry as a result of theft may be prevented, which will help enhance security and improve convenience.
Panasonic has introduced gate control systems using facial recognition technology to airports and amusement parks, but during this experiment Panasonic will verify the commercial viability of the KPAS.
