Mississauga, ON, April 25, 2013 – Nikon Canada is proud to announce its partnership with Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival for the third year in a row. Its involvement with the Toronto-based festival has made possible three main events: Nikon Lecture Series, featuring world-class authorities in the photographic arts who will share their worldly experiences, expertise, techniques, and the tips and tricks they’ve learned throughout their careers; Field of Vision photo contest, encouraging submissions from photographers of all skill levels to submit photos based on weekly assignments for a chance to win prizes; and Nikon Scholarships, awarded to three Canadian photography students to attend the Magnum Photos Workshop in Toronto from May 13-17, 2013.

“CONTACT 2013 is a marquee event in Canada’s arts and photography community, and Nikon Canada’s involvement demonstrates the company’s ongoing support of local, Canadian and international artists in their passion for photography,” said Gregory Flasch, National Advertising and Communications Manager at Nikon Canada. “This year’s theme focuses on the ‘Field of Vision,’ which establishes photography as an amplification of the sense of sight and the camera as a tool to extend vision and perception. The works presented in this year’s festival demonstrate this notion, and we hope it will inspire beginner and professional photographers to continue to broaden their horizons, share their perspectives and communicate their knowledge of themselves and the world around us through visual arts.”

Field of Vision Photo Contest
Photographs allow us to experience perspectives we are not normally privy to and savour qualities we may otherwise miss. This year’s theme focuses on the ‘Field of Vision.’ Vision can be understood as both sight – the act of perceiving with the eye and the entire view it has the ability to encompass – and as the power of creative imagination – the ability to conceive an exceptional idea, image, object or circumstance.

Each week during CONTACT 2013, Nikon Canada will challenge photographers with a different assignment for a chance to win a Nikon COOLPIX P330 and a $50 gift certificate from Vistek. One grand prize winner will be selected by public community voting and will receive a CONTACT Limited Edition Print (valued at $1,000).

To enter the contest, view the submissions gallery and vote, visit www.contactfestivalnikon.ca. Contest opens on May 1, 2013.

Nikon Scholarships
Three Nikon scholarships are available to Canadian photography students who are currently enrolled in a registered educational institution in Canada or abroad. A jury of photographers from Magnum Photos, an international co-operative that has covered many historical events around the world, will select qualified applicants based on their work and personal statement. These students will each receive a scholarship (valued at $1,350) to attend the Magnum Photos Workshop in Toronto from May 13-17, 2013. The workshop provides photographers with an opportunity to develop a new body of work and improve visual, conceptual and editing skills, while focusing on story formation and visual literacy. Designed for photographers with an interest in photojournalism, street photography, narrative and storytelling, this five-day shooting workshop will provide participants with a daily program of shooting, reviews, critiques, mentoring, editing, and the opportunity to learn amongst peers.

The application deadline is April 26, 2013. For more information, visit the scholarship page.
