Eco Art National Youth Photo Contest

If you fancy having your art exhibited on 8′ x 8′ (about 2.4 m x 2.4 m) panels on the Rideau Canal Skateway during the 2012 skating season, then enter the “Eco Art National Youth Photo Contest” (warning: read the License before you do). It’s open to young Canadian photographers and the photos must have an environmental theme. Be creative, be original and your photo could be one of 40 to be displayed to hundreds of thousands of visitors during Winterlude, Canada’s winter celebration.

We’re looking for young Canadian photographers who have something to say about the environment. Grab your camera and show us your creative and original views on the environment. Your photo could be exhibited in popular places in Ottawa–Gatineau!

Deadline: October 31, 2011 at midnight E.S.T.

However, do note there is a rights grab associated with the contest.

Here’s the relevant part about license rights:

Licence

Participants shall retain the copyright in/to their photograph but they must provide the NCC with a non-exclusive, world-wide, perpetual, royalty-free and irrevocable license to use the photograph. Participants will grant this licence when they submit the Submission and Permission Form. The terms of the licence cannot be modified by the Participants.

Again, we don’t like the “world-wide, perpetual, royalty-free and irrevocable license” part which amounts to a rights grab, i.e. because you participated in their contest, showcased their contest, won a prize, now they reserve to themselves the right to use your pictures anywhere for whatever reason they like (i.e. for promoting the contest as well as for any other commercial purpose) for ever. What’s the point of you retaining the copyright if they can use it wherever, whenever and for whatever they like? Sounds like an oxymoron.

We don’t believe the National Capital Commission (NCC) is setting out to purposefully steal the rights of young Canadian photographers and therefore encourage them to change their license wordings:

“Participants shall retain the copyright in/to their photograph but they must provide the NCC with a non-exclusive, world-wide, royalty-free license for the period of one year to use the photograph for the express purpose of promoting the contest.”

Read all the Terms and Conditions.
