Augmented Reality Eyeglasses for Military, Autistic People and Husbands

We told you about the eyeglasses that help people with poor vision recognize what is happening around them and in that post we mused about augmented reality eyeglasses. Well, turns out researchers at the MIT Media Lab are working on them.

One of these are the “social X-ray specs” that uses a camera to sense a person’s emotions and warn you if they are confused or angry. It will even flash a light to suggest you stop talking so as not to aggravate an already tense situation. Every husband needs one of these “jerk-o-meter” so as to avoid disastrous marital gaffes. Can they please also augment it with the right words to say?

The article also lists augmented reality glasses that currently exist:

  • In Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo, police officers wear special glasses that scan a face, match it against a database of criminal mugshots and blink a red light if there’s a match. Also we suggest that a database of their wives’ facial expressions, such as annoyance, impatience, and anger, should be thrown in free.
  • Thad Starner at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta wears a small monocle-like device that retrieves video, audio and text snippets of past conversations with the person you are currently talking to. Salespersons, doctors, and husbands would all benefit from this gem.
  • An imaging device that can see through/around walls or blind corners. The military, car drivers and husbands certainly need this life-saving technology.
