Nano World Photography

Mon February 28, 2011

Courtesy Image: Michael Oliveri

Courtesy Image: Michael Oliveri

What you are looking at is a landscape from the nano world, i.e. at the atomic level. In this case, it is a photo of zinc oxide nanorods being produced in a furnace burning at 600°C (1,100°F). The rods are 50 to 150 nanometers in diameter. In case you’ re still wondering what all these measurements mean, objects in the nano world typically are up to 1,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair.

The photos are the work of Michael Oliveri, University of Georgia digital media professor, who uses a scanning electron microscope to capture these images. He combines up to 40 smaller images to create the panoramas.

Bare Leg Ads

Mon February 28, 2011

From the same people who brought you the Cranial Billboards comes the Bare Leg Ad. As the name implies, the ad is imprinted onto a person’s bare legs. Of course, you must be wearing shorts or a short dress for this to work. The ad is printed onto indented plates that are then affixed to benches in bus stops, malls and parks and when unsuspecting victim sits on the bench, the ad gets imprinted onto the bare leg skin. The imprint is supposed to last for up to an hour. Cute, but if you can read it, you’re way too close.

Do Limited Edition Prints Still Make Sense In The Digital Age?

Mon February 28, 2011

Alain Briot addresses the issue of limited photographic prints in the digital age. Should a photographer release a print in a limited edition, i.e. sell only a certain number of them and then take that print out of circulation forever? The primary reason for such a marketing strategy is to be able to command very high prices for such prints since only a few financially-abled collecteurs will be able to do so. Ansel Adams and Alfred Stieglitz were against print numbering, but then they printed only in the hundreds or at most 1000 or so prints. But digital technology today allows the photographer to print the highest quality work at the press of a button.

It’s an interesting debate, so be sure to read his article over at Luminous Landscape.

A Day Made of Glass

Sun February 27, 2011

From CorningIncorporated

Corning envisions a day in the near future when its specialty glass will be at the heart of many of our interactions with the computer and Internet. Screens will be wide, ultra thin, frameless and touch-sensitive. Imagine a fridge door that is really a screen where you can display pictures, write text on and manipulate the digital objects with a flick of the finger. Or interactive work surface tables that you really want to work on — that go way beyond Minority Report UI and anything Microsoft may be currently working on. Watch the video. Whoever came up with the various UI design ideas demonstrates a vision of the future that is very attractive for homes, offices and even schools. Corning should start making useful consumer products; it certainly has people with the right vision.

From joshpnw2

It appears that Canada has a new secret army in training and, from the looks of it, they are well-trained indeed, all goose-stepping in perfect order. Canadians can all sleep safely now.
