The Canon EOS Ra (EOS R astrophotography) is the first mirrorless camera specially designed for astrophotography. That Canon should be the first mirrorless camera manufacturer to satisfy the needs of this specialized market says a lot about its commitment to its full-frame EOS R mirrorless series.

Targeting the needs of astrophotographers, the new EOS Ra full-frame mirrorless camera is based on the EOS R and incorporates the RF mount design, 30.3MP CMOS sensor, high-precision electronic viewfinder, high-sensitivity, low-noise performance and 4K time-lapse shooting. The infrared cutoff filter in front of the sensor has been modified to allow four times greater transmittance of hydrogen-alpha (Hα) light of 656.3 nm compared to the original EOS R, and that helps to capture high-precision images of the deep-red wavelengths emitted by nebulae in vivid color, without any special camera alterations. Also, a 30x maximum magnification allows extremely precise manual focus adjustments.

An optional accessory that would be a must-have for this kind of photography is an AC adapter kit, which allows the camera to be powered through an AC wall outlet or a battery-powered inverter. Other optional accessories include a BG-E22 battery grip and three EF-EOS R mount adapters to accommodate the entire range of over seventy EF and EF-S lenses.

Canon Lenses

Note that, because of the modified IR filter, Canon does not recommend the EOS Ra for general photography, since the camera cannot achieve normal color balance when shooting subjects that emit or reflect infrared radiation. However, Sky&Telescope has tried it for normal daytime photography using Auto and Daylight white balance, with interesting results.

How easy is it to attach the EOS Ra to a telescope? In an article on Canon UK, Canon professional imaging specialist and astrophotographer Matteo La Torre writes that the attachment “is less complex than with a DSLR, thanks to the short flange distance and large diameter mount of the EOS R System. You can attach the EOS Ra directly to the eyepiece holder of the telescope via a T2-RF adapter ring or by using one of the EF-EOS R mount adapters and a T2-EF ring. Alternatively, you can fit a lens to the EOS Ra and mount this on the telescope using a static or tilting ‘piggyback’ device, which enables the telescope and camera lens to be aligned and track the sky in parallel.
