Group Shot Technique They Didn’t Teach You In Photography School

Thu September 8, 2011

From evandrofoto

Call him unconventional. When photographer Mike Larson needed to capture a group shot of a wedding party, he simply tossed his camera (equipped with a fisheye) into the air and let it record what may. But it was not a spur of the moment decision for Mike has become quasi famous for the camera toss technique.

Jennifer Newberry Photography

Baby B&W

I knew Jennifer as a work colleague long before I knew her as a photographer. But when I found out she had a photography business going, I went to pay her site a visit and contacted her about her photography and work style. Here’s what I found:

Jennifer Newberry has a fun and vibrant approach to her people and event photography. She is primarily an on-location photographer covering the Aurora/Newmarket/Richmond Hill area (Ontario, Canada), though she’ll travel if you’ll cover the travel expenses (she can’t wait for her first customer from Hawaii). Her portfolio is brimming with images of families, children, engagements, weddings, and other events her clients want to retain fond memories of.

Reviewing the photos on her website and the testimonials from customers, I can picture a typical photography session: there are lots of laughter, fun and smiles all around — which means you’ll end up with fantastic images to remember it all by!

And, for just being loyal readers of Photoxels, if you mention that you heard about her through Photoxels, she’ll take 10% off your first session, and any prints or products you order from that session! So, go visit her at Jennifer Newberry Photography and did I mention that Mother’s Day is coming? A photo session could be this year’s perfect Mother’s Day present!

Neda + Sati Wedding Video Is Refreshingly Different

Sat November 27, 2010

Neda + Sati “A Marriage of Two Cultures” from Cherish Films on Vimeo.

Over the course of a week two cultures came together to form one big, wonderful, new family. This is the story of Neda and Sati’s love uniting two worlds.

www.cherishfilm.com

This is a refreshingly different wedding video, no doubt professionally shot and edited considering the expenses involved (an elephant?). I actually enjoyed watching it all the way to the end. All the elements of a traditional wedding video are there, just mixed up so like a well-cooked meal that you can almost taste the happiness and joy of that day. I noticed there were lots of short clips (some barely registerd at 1 second long) that seemed to add variety to what would otherwise be a long drawn ceremony (probably lasting in the hours).

Bruce Gilden’s In Your Face Street Potography

Tue November 23, 2010

From madshaunyboy

Bruce Gilden practices a form of street photography that is right in your face — literally. He shoots with a Leica and wide-angle lens, uses a low angle often and flashes his subjects right in the face. He shoots in B&W. The result is off-beat and mostly depcits people trying to avoid him. If you see him on the street, put on your dour face (he doesn’t like it when his subjects smile) and strut past. Who knows, he may find you interesting enough to take a snapshot of? Whether you agree with Bruce Gilden’s approach or not, there is no denying that his unique personality shows in his street photography.

David Saxe has a different take and focuses on wedding photography. Here, in-your-face will not work, but David argues that, like Bruce Gilden, you should let your unique personality show in your wedding photographs to stand out from the crowd.
