  • National Awards – Entries submitted to the Open competition are automatically entered into the National Awards based on nationality (please check if your individual country is participating).
  • Categories: Architecture / Culture / Enhanced / Motion / Nature / Wildlife / Portraits / Still Life / Street Photography / Travel
  • Prizes
    • Open Competition winner – $5,000 (USD) / Sony digital imaging equipment / Flights and accommodation to the awards ceremony in London / Included in exhibition at Somerset House, London

Youth – For photographers aged 12-19, judged on a single image responding to the brief of ‘Beauty’

  • Images must be taken in 2016
  • If you are under 16, you have Your parent’s or legal guardian’s consent to participate in the Competition.
  • Prizes
    • Youth competition winner – Flights and accommodation to awards in London / Sony digital imaging equipment / Included in exhibition at Somerset House, London
    • Shortlist – Digital exhibition at Somerset House, London / Publication in winners’ book

Student Focus – For photography students, judged on a single image responding to a brief

  • Students must be between 18 – 30 years of age on the closing date of the competition.
  • Images must be taken between the 1st June 2016 – 5th December 2016.
  • Images may be digitally manipulated. You must provide details on how your image has been altered.
  • All entries to be uploaded by tutors by the 5th December 2016.

…7.1 The World Photography Organisation recognises You, the author of the image, retain full ownership of the copyright in each Entry.

7.2 All entrants understand that any image submitted to the competition may be used by the World Photography Organisation, and its Event Partners, for marketing and promotional purposes of You the author and the event only, for a maximum of three years after the awards ceremony in April 2017. You hereby grant the World Photography Organisation a non-exclusive, irrevocable licence in each Entry throughout the world for three years in all media for any use connected to the promotion of You the author and the SWPA event and/or competition, including, but not limited too:
(a) judging the Competition
(b) displaying the winning entries and runners up at public exhibitions promoting the World Photography Organisation and organised by the World Photography Organisation
(c) inclusion within the Website, a World Photography Awards book, magazine or similar
(d) inclusion within any materials promoting of the Competition and / or any exhibition organised by the World Photography Organisation, in the promotion of the the World Photography Organisation
(e) inclusion on Competition- and exhibition-related products to be sold by the the World Photography Organisation or any third party following the individual agreement by the author
(f) sub-licencing the Entries to the press for reproduction in connection with the Competition and any exhibition
(g) allowing viewers of the Website to view images on a computer screen, PDA or mobile telephone and store such pages in electronic form on disk or on a PDA or mobile telephone (but not on any server or other storage device connected to a network) for their personal, non-commercial use only. Please also refer to clause 9.

7.3 All entrants understand that the image information, including image name and description, may be shared with Event partners and media as per clause 7.1, 7.2 and 8. For the avoidance of doubt the “image information” does not include any personal information of You the author…

You agree to participate in related publicity and to the use of Your name and likeness for the purposes of advertising, promotion and publicity without additional compensation….

13. All entrants must be able to supply a high resolution image suitable for printing in media and an exhibition should the image be required.

14. There are no cash alternatives available for prize winners….

World’s largest photography competition celebrates its 10th anniversary
New categories in Professional, Open and Youth competitions

June 1, 2016: The Sony World Photography Awards, the world’s largest photography competition, opens for entries today. Created by the World Photography Organisation, 2017 marks the awards’ 10th anniversary.

The Sony World Photography Awards annually recognizes the world’s best photography. Open to all photographers, the awards are an authoritative voice in the photographic industry that has the power to shape the careers of its winning and shortlisted photographers.Each year the competition attracts both emerging talent and established artists and presents the world’s best photography from the last 12 months to a global audience.

The newly re-launched website gives a greater visual platform to the awards’ photographers and makes the entry process simpler than ever before.

The 2016 Sony World Photography Awards attracted a record-breaking 230,103 entries to from 186 countries. The 2016 Professional Photographer of the Year title was awarded to Iranian photojournalist Asghar Khamseh for his series ‘Fire of Hatred’.

The Sony World Photography Awards shortlist will be announced on February 28, Open and National Awards winners revealed on March 28 and overall winners announced on April 20, 2017, with an exhibition at Somerset House, London, running from April 21 – May 7 2017.
