QUICKFACT SHEET

The Sony a6700 (aka α6700, A6700, Alpha 6700) is an advanced-level APS-C compact mirrorless camera for those who are serious about photography. It improves on the a6600 with a new 26MP image sensor from the cinema camera FX30, vlogging features from the ZV-E1 and Sony’s latest and greatest AI-enhanced Tracking AF from the A7R V.

Here’s how the a6700 improves on the a6600, and how it differs from two of its closest APS-C mirrorless competitors: the Fujifilm X-S20 and X-T5:

As you can see, the Sony a6700 compares favourably with its main competitors, in both features and in price. The one black mark is the underwhelming viewfinder: at 0.7x magnification, it is small. Before it came out, the Sony a6700 was rumored to be better than the Fujifilm X-T5, the de facto benchmark enthusiast APS-C mirrorless camera. Well a quick glance at the table above shows that this is not quite the case. The Fujifilm X-T5 is a bit more expensive, but also provides better features: 40MP sensor with a 160MP option for detailed landscape photography, a much more enjoyable and brillantly large viewfinder, the ability to lock focus in darker low light conditions, two SD card slots, and the direct analog-style controls the X-T series is famous for.

That said, you might still want to choose the Sony a6700 over its competitors. What you cannot see on paper is Sony’s trump card: Though the Tracking AF is good and reliable in the Fujifilm cameras, Sony’s latest AI-enhanced AF Recognition and Tracking AF are simply on a different higher level than in the other cameras. That fast, precise and sticky AF is what convinces a lot of photographers to switch to Sony.

Of course, if you are already invested into one of the camera system, you will probably want to stay with that system. But if this is your first camera, and you are serious about photography, then focus on the lenses each system provides you. Both Sony and Fujifilm provide excellent lenses. All Fujifilm lenses are APS-C, and Sony has done a great job adding APS-C lenses (counting 22 as of writing).

The Sony a6700 (2023, US $1,399.99) may be your ideal compact APS-C mirrorless camera. We recommend buying it with one of the available dedicated APS-C kit lens: Sony E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens (camera+lens combo: US $1499.99); Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS (camera+lens combo: US $1799.99).

If you want a camera+lens combo that will allow you to do street, portrait, sports, bird, wildlife, tele landscape and macro photography with one lens, try pairing the Sony a6700 with the long telephoto zoom FE 70-200MM F4 Macro G OSS II (US $1,699,99) plus 2x teleconverter (US $549.99), which should make for a formidable combo (105-600mm equiv., plus 0.75x-1.5x macro).

A cheaper long telephoto zoom option to the above is the E 70–350 mm (105-525mm equiv.) F4.5–6.3 G OSS lens (US $899.99).

If you are looking for a vlogging camera, check out the Sony ZV-E10 (2023, US $699.99).
