This Week’s (June 5-11, 2010) Digital Camera Review Roundup

Here is this week’s (June 5-11, 2010) digital camera review roundup:

  • We published our Fujifilm HS10 Revieweasily the most DSLR-like bridge Super Zoom digital camera… for those who want DSLR functionality without the hassle and expense of investing in additional lenses and other accessories.
  • PhotographyBLOG recommends the Pentax X90 [QuickPrice Check] and finds that “the attached big zoom capability [gives] amateurs the equivalent reach of a paparazzi.
  • Looking for a compact that does well in low light? TrustedReviews gives the Canon PowerShot SD4000IS [QuickPrice Check] a big thumbs up, concluding that “the IXUS 300 HS [SD4000 IS] is a very good camera, with a nice easy-to use controls, a good range of features, decent performance and excellent image quality, especially at higher ISO settings.
  • It’s cute and retro and anyone remembering the early days of photography will ove the Pentax Optio I10 [QuickPrice Check] and according to DigitalCameraReview, the “The Optio I-10 is a fun camera to use. It’s very attractive thanks to its small size and retro appearance… while the I-10 is not perfect, it’s a good, small, snapshot camera and well worth purchasing, especially if you can pick it up for the street price.
  • Imaging Resource rates the Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS / IXUS 210 [Specs] as “a pretty good snapshot camera with an interesting interface, but overactive noise suppression reduces output quality too noticeably for the enthusiast.
  • Who doesn’t love a good shoot-out between two great cameras: KenRockwell pits the Nikon D700 [Specs] against the Canon EOS 5D Mark II [Specs] — and you’ll have to read the review to find out which he recommends for what type of shooting — and which one Ken prefers.
  • PhotographyBLOG highly recommends the Ricoh GXR P10 as offering “such an intuitive, customisable and photographer-friendly experience as the P10.
  • Imaging Resource finds traces of Canon’s “genes” in the Canon A3100 IS, concluding that it is “image quality that makes the Canon A3100 stand out among the growing species of inexpensive digicams.
  • DigitalCameraReview likes what the DigitalCameraReview brings to the table: DigitalCameraReview
  • TrustedReviews likes the Fujifilm FinePix F80EXR [Specs] marvelling at “the excellent EXR chip and feature set. It does perform well in low light [but]…
  • PhotographyBLOG was definitely not impressed at all with the handling, image quality or MSRP of the Kodak EasyShare Z981 [QuickPrice Check] concluding, “There are better options out there.
  • TrustedReviews wasn’t impressed at all by the retro styling of the Pentax Optio I10 [QuickPrice Check] concluding that “I like the I-10’s bold styling, and it is a nice camera to use, but with such poor image quality it’s impossible to recommend it.
  • LetsGoDigital likes the Canon PowerShot SD4000IS [QuickPrice Check]
  • finding that “the Canon IXUS 300 HS is a stylish design camera […] for the design-conscious consumer with an eye for image quality.

  • Probably the most anticipated review of this year is that of the Sony Nex-5 and Nex-3 Digital Interchangeable Lens (DIL, or mirrorless DSLR) cameras. But Sony seems to have botched it by throwing away the advantages of a larger image sensor, says DPReview who concludes sadly that, “As cameras to literally just point and shoot the NEXs do pretty well, which will be enough for some people [but] we’d be hard-pushed to think of an interchangeable lens camera less appropriate for a keen photographer. In conclusion, the NEX system shows a great deal of promise but we’d strongly advise waiting for the next generation of products.
  • Finally, no serious photographer should be without Photoshop CS5. PhotographyBLOG reviews it and concludes that “Adobe has made good progress in making Photoshop more approachable for most.
