About 60 troops from the Army’s historic Old Guard have spent the Summer nights photographing each and every grave in Arlington National Cemetery with an iPhone. There are more than 219,000 grave markers and more than 43,000 sets of cremated remains in the cemetry. It’s all part of the Army’s effort to account for every grave and to update and fully digitize the cemetery’s maps. Apparently the reason they do this at night is to escape the summer heat and to avoid interrupting funerals [an average of 27 every day]. How do they take pictures in darkness? One soldier shines a light on a grave while another photographs it. They’ve captured the grave marker of astronauts, combat nurses, Medal of Honor recipients and unnamed infants born to service members. The endeavor took almost three months.
