Wired.com Goes Creative Commons, Shares Photos

Tue November 8, 2011

I’m impressed. It’s not everyday that someone gives high quality high resolution photos free, and that’s exactly what Wired.com has done with many of its wonderful photos.

Wired.com photographers have the enviable job of shooting the coolest stuff and most intriguing people in the technology world. Now we’re giving away many of those photos to you, the public, for free…. Take them, share them, remix them — they’re yours.

New Subliminal Ways To Advertise Products Uses Imperceptible Photo Flashes

Fri December 17, 2010

From PaperPlanefr

Apparently, BMW has experimented with a new way to subliminally plant a message (in this case, their logo) into viewer’s mind without their being consciously aware of it. In the video above, which is a BMW ad, the BMW logo is nowhere displayed on screen. Yet, by flashing a powerful photo flash through a cutout of the logo, the image of the logo is imprinted onto your retina for a couple of seconds. This image becomes visible when you briefly close your eyes.

Are we going to be subjected to this form of subliminal ad in the future, where every flash on screen is a suspected ad for a product or service?

New Remote Sensor Sees Thru Walls and Clothing From Miles Away

Tue July 13, 2010

The world of spying is about to change when the new terahertz remote sensor finally sees the light of day. Physicist Jingle Liu and his team of researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute used a laser to excite terahertz radiation at faraway targets. In the lab, the researchers demonstrated the technology at 67 feet (the available space in the lab) and are busy cataloging the unique signatures of various materials so the detector can differentiate car keys, makeup compact and Glock. As long as there is a good line of sight, a terahertz detector should be able to see through walls, packaging materials, and even clothing from thousands of feet away, identifying materials contained inside through their unique spectral signatures.

Olympus E-PL1 Review @ Wired

Fri April 9, 2010

Olympus E-PL1

Olympus E-PL1

It’s one of the best ways I can think of for beginners to take fantastic looking pictures, and enthusiasts will find it a highly capable second camera for when that dSLR is simply too bulky to lug around.

We’ve added another Olympus E-PL1 [Specs] Review to our Reviews Matrix.

Wired has published their review of the Olympus E-PL1, an easy-to-use version of the E-P2 Digital Interchangeable Lens (DIL) camera. The E-PL1 features 12.3MP resolution (on a large 17.3 x 13.0 mm Live MOS sensor), sensor-shift image stabilization to help reduce camera shake, a direct HD Movie button, a 6.9-cm (2.7-in.) LCD display screen (230k-dot), a built-in pop-up flash, Art Filters, Scene Modes, and a new Live Guide that simplifies exposure adjustments without having to know the technical lingo — all in a compact and light body.

The Google 5-Click Limit

Wed December 2, 2009

The traditional publishers are at it again. Having tried once, when the Web was still in its infancy, they are again trying to make us pay to read news on the Internet. Never mind that newspapers have never made money from subscription but have always relied heavily on advertisement revenues.

Now, Google is going to help them achieve that elusive goal by implementing a 5-Click limit. What this means in practical terms is that the number of free pages you will be allowed to view a day will be up to 5. Publishers will love this. Though, if they really wanted to, they could have a zero-tolerance policy and not have any of their pages indexed by Google by specifying it in the robots.txt file [though the use of the robots.txt is not strictly adhered to by all search engines]. However, they do want the link back from Google. In fact, Google drives lots of traffic to these sites for free.
