Sticking Your Big Left Toe In Your Right Eye

Wed August 3, 2011

Paul Melcher has an intersting article over at Black Star about how we are losing the battle with social networks as far as who has the rights to the photos we post online on these sites.

He states categorically:

It’s time to accept the fact that if you post your images on a social network, there is a 110 percent chance you will lose complete control of that image.

The title of this post is also a direct quote (though I added the “right”).

Basically, Melcher says we got only three choices as a photographer.

When Best Friends Become Enemies

Thu December 2, 2010

I won’t go so far as to say that publishers and photographers who sent award-winning photos their way were ever best friends in the full sense of the term, but they collaborated very closely. No more.

In fact, Paul Melcher writes over at Black Star that the media industry is quickly losing its primary source of imagery. The photo industry has started to look for new revenues — and respect — somewhere else. By publishing their own photos on the Internet, photograhers get into direct competition with publishers who rely on images that have been used over and over again thousands of time.
