Ken Rockwell has posted their review of the Canon EOS 7D, an APS-C DSLR camera targeted to serious photographers and Canon’s answer to Nikon’s popular D300. The Canon EOS 7D is positioned just below the full-frame EOS 5D Mark II, has 19MP resolution, Continuous Shooting at 8fps, and Full HD Video capture at 1920 x 1080 resolution with selectable frame rates of 24p, 25p or 30p. “Though the image quality is not quite up to the standard of the $2,600 full-frame EOS 5D Mark II … the Canon 7D [is] a great choice for low light shooting.”

Canon has posted a firmware update for the EOS 7D that incorporates the following fixes.

1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the set aperture moves when shooting movies in manual exposure mode using some Canon lenses (such as macro lenses).
2. Fixes the AF point-selection behavior of the C.Fn III-7 (Manual AF pt. selec. pattern) custom function when set to [1].
3. Fixes the AF point display for the viewfinder electronic level when shooting in the vertical position.
4. Corrects misspellings in the Spanish and Thai menus for applicable products.

Canon EOS 7D

The Canon EOS 7D [Specs] is a very serious competitor for Nikon’s flagship APS-C DSLR (the Nikon D300S [Specs]), a superb midrange digital SLR that is an excellent choice for any serious photographer and will certainly appeal to sports and action photographers. The EOS 7D is a digital SLR camera that makes no compromises. In many respects it flies past the 5D Mark II. It’s simply a stunning achievement.

But what about video shooting with the 7D? Lots have been written, but perhaps we should let the movies shot on this camera speak for themselves.
