The Secret “Bohemian Village” Atop Carnegie Hall

From lostbohemia

Sitting atop the famous Carnegie Hall is a place many artists call home, a vibrant 19th century artist community (the video shows a singer, a portrait photographer, an actor, a concert pianist, a dancer, an acting teacher) that is being evicted to make way for an expansion of the hall, minus its tenants. In this video, they have one month to leave and find new digs, not an easy thing for some who have stayed there for more than 50 years.

This video (2010) is the trailer for the film “Lost Bohemia,” Directed by Josef “Birdman” Astor (May 2011). He had a studio there for 25 years and recorded his neighbors, unaware that all that footage would eventually end up as part of a movie.

…a ragtag army of fighters trying to preserve that place. We had no idea of the great machine of politics and money we were fighting against… This place was specifically built for artists… it’s from the inside, it’s the voices of the tenants… we’re telling the story as it is unfolding…
