The Samsung NX10 is a mirrorless Digital Interchangeable Lens (DIL) camera and features 14.6MP on a large APS-C CMOS image sensor. It is targeted to beginner and serious amateur photographers.

As with all DIL cameras, the bulky mirror, viewfinder and pentaprism (or pentamirror) of a DSLR are eliminated and replaced by a high resolution screen and electronic viewfinder (EVF), resulting in a significant reduction in size and weight.

The NX10 has an AMOLED screen with a high 614k-dot resolution and an EVF with VGA (921k-dot) resolution. The AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen is supposed to be better than the conventional LCD screen, providing easier viewing in bright sunshine and at acute viewing angles. The high resolution EVF should provide a view as clear and bright as any optical viewfinder.

The NX10 senses when the camera is brought up to the photographer’s face and automatically switches the view from the screen to the EVF.

The Samsung NX10 has opted for Lens-shift (Optical) Image Stabilization (OIS). This means that there is no built-in I.S. in the camera body and it is up to you to purchase a lens with or without I.S. There are currectly three lenses available for the NX10: the 30mm (45mm equiv.) F2 pancake lens is not image stabilized; the 18-55mm (27-83mm equiv.) F3.5/5.6 lens is image stabilized; the 55-200mm (75-300mm equiv.) tele zoom is image stabilized. Image Stabilization helps reduce camera shake when using slow shutter speeds and at long focal lengths.

Sensor-shift vs. Lens-shift I.S.

Sensor-shift I.S. is built-in into the camera body and therefore every lens attached to the camera gains the benefit of image stabilization. However, because the stabilization occurs at the time the picture is taken, it is not possible to see a stabilized image on screen or through the viewfinder.

Lens-shift (Optical) I.S. is dependent on the lens and adds to the price of the lens. Since the image is stabilized by the lens, OIS allows the camera to stabilize the image seen on the screen and through the viewfinder. This is a great advantage, especially at long focal lengths, since the stabilized image allows you to follow action and compose easier. Because I.S. is optimized for each lens, some photographers are also of the opinion that OIS works better than a general purpose Sensor-shift IS.

Don’t worry too much what type of I.S. your digital camera uses. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages, and I would not make it your main selection criteria.

The NX10 claims that its DRIMe II Pro engine and advanced autofocus (AF) algorithm allows for ultra fast and high precision Contrast-Detect AF. Early hands-on previews seem to corroborate that claim and report the AF is as fast as that on entry-level DSLRs.

Beginning amateur photographers will feel comfortable with the NX10’s Smart AUTO and easy-to-use Scene Modes. A Smart (Dynamic) Range feature helps retain detail in both bright and dark areas in a picture. More advanced photographers will appreciate the full exposure flexibility provided by the PASM (Program AE, Aperture-Priority AE, Shutter-Priority AE, Manual) modes, as well as the availability of RAW file capture.

The NX10 accepts interchangeable lenses and, as with any interchangeable lens camera, dust can enter the camera and land on the sensor whenever a lens is changed. The NX10 has a Supersonic Dust Reduction system that helps keep dust particles clear of the image sensor.

HD movie is recorded at 1280 x 720 @ 30fps with mono sound.

The Samsung NX10 is a DIL camera with a large APS-C image sensor that promises DSLR image quality and performance in a small, light and ergonomically designed body.

Available in two colors: Noble Black and Titan Silver.
