The National Geographic World In Focus Photo Contest’s deadline is fast approaching on August 23, 2010. This photo contest has two streams: Amateur and Pro. There are cameras, expeditions, travel vacations and workshops to be won. There is, unfortunately, an entry fee.

Amateur photographers will be granting:
By participating, all entrants grant the Sponsors and their designees, licensees or affiliates (the “Authorized Parties”) a non-exclusive, worldwide license to post the entries online so that viewers may view all competing entries. In addition, each entrant grants to the Authorized Parties an irrevocable, non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual right and license to reproduce, distribute, display and create derivative works of his/her entry(ies) (along with a name credit) in connection with The World in Focus Photo Contest and promotion of The World in Focus Photo Contest, in any media now or hereafter known, including but not limited to: publication in PDN and/or Traveler magazines showcasing the winners; exhibit of the work at the PhotoPlus Expo 2010; The World in Focus Photo Contest live gallery; the World in Focus Photo Contest Web site (www.worldinfocuscontest.com) and on PDNonline.com and nationalgeographic.com; and in exhibits and promotions related to the World in Focus Photo Contest. Authorized Parties will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such use.
It’s forever, without compensation, whether your entry wins a prize or not. At least, it’s non-exclusive, which, if I am correct, means that you can enter these photos in other contests.
Interestingly, pro photographers get a different license rules:

In addition, each winner grants to the Authorized Parties a license for use of his/her winning entry in connection with The World in Focus Photo Contest and promotion of The World in Focus Photo Contest, in any media now or hereafter known, including but not limited to: publication in PDN and/or Traveler magazines showcasing the winners; exhibit of the work at the PhotoPlus Expo 2010; The World in Focus Photo Contest live gallery; the World in Focus Photo Contest Web site (www.worldinfocuscontest.com) and on PDNonline.com and nationalgeographic.com; and in exhibits and promotions related to the World in Focus Photo Contest. Such winners’ license is a non-exclusive, worldwide, 24 months (beginning the date winners are notified) license to reproduce, distribute, display and create derivative works of the entries. Authorized Parties will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such use.
They grant the rights to use their entries for a limited time only — which is as it should be. We call upon National Geographic to change their rules for amateur photographers to restrict license use to the same limited time as for pro photographers.
