MIT Develops Gel That Permits Portable, Affordable and Super High-Resolution 3-D Imaging

From kimoatmit

While doing research for creating tactile sensors for robots to give them a sense of touch, MIT researchers realized that their system provided much higher resolution than tactile sensing required. Their material, called GelSight, is a block of clear rubber with a skin coated with metallic paint. When pressed against a surface, the painted skin closely conforms to the shape of the surface allowing the naked eye to see what previously required a microscope to be visible. Mounted with a camera and flash inside a tube the size of a soda can, GelSight becomes a portable super high-resolution 3D imaging device. A second configuration includes a DSLR with 18MP resolution.
