This Week’s (May 15-21, 2010) Digital Camera Review Roundup

Here is this week’s (May 15-21, 2010) digital camera review roundup:

  • CameraLabs highly recommends the Canon IXUS 130 / PowerShot SD1400 IS [Specs], “a great-looking tiny camera with beautifully rounded corners, allowing it to slip discreetly into any pocket. Handle it in the flesh and it’s hard to resist.
  • We published our Samsung NX10 Review, an impressive Digital Interchangeable Lens (DIL, aka “mirrorless DSLR”) camera that competes very well against entry-level DSLRs. It’s fun, hard-to-resist and highly recommended.
  • But don’t take our word for it. Get a second opinion from DigitalCameraReview who finds that the Samsung NX10 [Specs]offers DSLR-like image quality, versatility and adjustability with sub-DSLR size and weight. The camera is easy to use for novices and experts alike. See, what did we tell you?
  • Here’s another mirrorless DSLR review, this time of the Olympus E-PL1 [Specs] by DPReview who concludes that “Point-and-shoot users won’t get the very most out of the camera but, thanks to an excellent JPEG engine, it’s likely they’ll spend much of their time too delighted by their pictures to worry about it.” High praise indeed!
  • The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2 [Specs] is found by TrustedReviews to be “only an incremental upgrade from the original G1, but most of the changes are for the better.” You might want to get a second opinion from 1 and 2.
  • PhotographyBLOG is surprised that the Fujifilm FinePix S1600 [Specs] is “a much more capable and appealing camera than its budget price tag would initially suggest.
  • Imaging Resource takes a look at the Canon PowerShot SX210 IS [Specs] and finds “a fabulous little camera which offers a lot in a well-designed and highly portable package.
  • DCRP (dcresource) is pretty grumpy about the Nikon Coolpix P100 [Specs], generally giving it a bad mark: “As a point-and-shoot, small print camera/camcorder, the Coolpix P100 is good, but not great. As an enthusiast camera, it disappoints.” You might want to get a second opinion [and place the P100 in proper perspective] from 1, 2, 3, and 4.
  • PhotographyBLOG likes the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 [QuickPrice Check] finding that “you can use this camera not only in the dark but also in the rain, the cold and at the beach.
  • Luminous Landscape finds that the Sony DSC-HX5V [QuickPrice Check] puts the “Fun back into Futography.” Sounds good, but er, Michael, we’re not sure what that means.
  • Great review of the Panasonic ZS7 / TZ10 [Specs] at LetsGoDigital who concludes: “Panasonic has managed to deliver an excellent digital mega zoom camera once again.
  • Steve’s Digicams finds the Olympus Stylus 7040 (Mju 7040) [Specs]is a full-featured […] digicam that is compact and easy to use. The camera lacks a little in image quality and the performance is average.
  • Steve’s Digicams rates the Casio EX-Z2000 [QuickPrice Check] as “a worthy competitor in the sub $200US category, offering speedy performance, good image quality, awesome battery life.
  • DigitalCameraReview likes the Fujifilm FinePix JZ500 [QuickPrice Check] for “snap-shooters and casual photographers rather than photography enthusiasts […] a very good choice for travelers, backpackers, hikers and mountain bikers who want a tough, lightweight, “go anywhere” camera.
  • PhotographyBLOG seems to agree that the Fujifilm FinePix JZ500 [QuickPrice Check]may not have the most features or best image quality, but the new Fujifilm JZ500 is still a compelling travel-zoom camera, particularly for point-and-shoot beginners.
  • DigitalCameraInfo recommends the Olympus E-PL1 [Specs]as an attractive step-up for point-and-shooters.
  • Imaging Resource finds the Sony DSC-W330 [QuickPrice Check] to work “best with lots of light, preferably daylight. Under these conditions the camera captures some very good photographs.
  • Finally, let’s not forget those who are looking for “a nice camera for those who are on a tight budget, or are picking up a camera for their teenager.Steve’s Digicams recommends the Casio EX-Z550 [QuickPrice Check].
  • One more thing, not a camera review, but an article by Thom Hogan at byThom, asking (and then answering) the million dollar question beginners are always asking, ““Which camera should I buy?” Read only if you are ready to step up to a higher level of photography.
