Sony World Photography Awards 2010 winners announced

Tonight, Thursday 22 April, the professional winners and the overall amateur winner of the Sony World Photography Awards 2010 were announced at a prestigious ceremony in Cannes, France.

Last month, the Amateur Winners were announced, and the 12 Professional Winners were announced tonight.

The prestigious L’Iris d’Or/Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year award was awarded to Tommaso Ausili in the Professional category.

Photographer Vitali Seitz was announced as the 2010 Sony World Amateur Photographer of the Year.

Sony World Photography Awards 2010 winners announced

  • Professional category winners revealed
  • Italian photographer Tommaso Ausili wins L’Iris d’Or
  • Vitali Seitz wins Sony World Photography Awards Amateur Photographer of the Year

The L’Iris d’Or and professional category winners of the 2010 Sony World Photography Awards were announced today, Thursday 22 April, at the Sony World Photography Awards Ceremony at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France.

The 12 professional winners spanned categories as diverse as fashion, architecture, current affairs and sport and were revealed alongside the Sony World Photography Awards Amateur Photographer of the Year as part of the World Photography Festival.

Sony World Photography Awards 2010 Amateur Winners Announced

The Sony World Photography Awards 2010 has announced their Amateur winners, one in each of nine categories. There were in total 43,745 submissions from 144 countries. The amateur category winners will be showcased at the Winners’ Exhibition as part of the World Photography Festival, a five day celebration of the craft of photography held in Cannes from 22-27 April. Each photographer will have their work published in the Sony World Photography Awards Winners’ Book and will then be exhibited around the world throughout 2010 and 2011 as part of the Sony World Photography Awards Global Tour.

Image Alteration Results in World Press Photo Disqualification

How much digital processing is permissible? Photographers vary in their opinion. Some do minimal post processing, usually to enhance the colors, contrast, and sharpening the edges. Others will think of nothing to add colors and even move objects. It is the latter action (moving an element from the original photo) that caused the World Press Photo to disqualify Stepan Rudik, winner of the 3rd prize story in Sports Features.

Sony World Photography Awards 2010 Shortlist nominations announced

190 photographers – 48 countries – 80,000 images

The shortlist for the 2010 Sony World Photography Awards is announced today, Tuesday 23 February. The list contains the names of 190 outstanding photographers from 48 different countries. From fashion to music, architecture to current affairs, the Sony World Photography Awards is one of the most comprehensive photographic competitions in the world.

The Honorary Judging Committee, comprising world-renowned photographers, curators, representatives from leading international photo agencies and picture editors came together in London to make their selection from over 80,000 professional and amateur photography submissions.

Eve Arnold is to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Sony World Photography Awards. She will be honoured at the annual awards ceremony in Cannes on 22 April, the day after her 98th birthday, amongst leading figures of the international photographic community.

Student Focus Award Shortlist nominations announced

The shortlist for the 2010 Sony World Photography Awards Student Initiative is announced today, Monday 8 February.

The Student Focus award is an extended university programme, and has grown from ten universities in Europe in the inaugural year of the awards, to 60 institutions in 2009. The 2010 competition has attracted a staggering 120 institutions across six continents, creating the world’s most high-profile student photography Award.

Sony and the World Photography Organisation (WP0) are delighted to announce that the city of Cannes will once again provide the location for the annual Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA) and World Photography Festival. Running from 22-27 April 2010, the Awards and Festival is set to be the global photographic event of the year.

Welcoming professional and amateur photographers, photography students and the general public, the Awards and Festival is a five day celebration of the craft of photography. It takes place across the City, at locations including the famous Croisette, with a host of exhibitions, workshops, portfolio reviews, student programmes and talks from World Photography Academy members including Jonathan Torgovnik, Nadav Kander and Reza. A highlight of the programme will be the ‘Photography Now’ symposium, presented by some of the leading international industry figures. It explores the current topics, trends, dilemmas and debates concerning photography today.

Sony World Photography Awards 2010 Judges announced

Leading figures from the international photographic community are announced today, 3 December 2009, as the jury members of three separate award programmes of the Sony World Photography Awards 2010.

The Honorary Jury for the main annual competition comprises 12 specially selected World Photography Organisation Academy members. For the professional awards selection, these 12 members will initially judge within their respective photographic genres of expertise. Later they will come together as one collective group to select the overall winners in both the amateur and professional programmes, and the overall winner, the I’Iris D’Or.
