Sony World Photography Awards 2012 Shortlist announced

Today, Thursday 2 February, the World Photography Organisation announces the shortlist for the 2012 Sony World Photography Awards.  Billed as the global photographic event of the year, the Sony World Photography Awards celebrate the very best in photography from around the world, from the next generation of emerging photographers through to the established masters of the art.

The 2012 competition has garnered increased worldwide interest with over 112,000 entries from 171 countries, with the shortlisted images depicting the stories of extraordinary lives from around the world.  The Professional competition reflects a turbulent year of global events with the war in Libya; the Greek and European economic crisis; the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan and the fall of Gaddafi, in the Photojournalism & Documentary categories.  The shortlist for the Fine Art and Commercial categories gets to the very heart of daily life -  a small sheep-farming community in Iceland; the rice harvest in South China; a religious pilgrimage in Poland and gold diggers in Chile.

Today, Wednesday 07 December, the World Photography Organisation, issues a last call for entries for the 2012 Sony World Photography Awards, the world’s most comprehensive photography competition. The deadline for entries is Wednesday 04 January 2012 giving photographers from across the world just four weeks left to enter.

The Sony World Photography Awards is free to enter and open to photographers of every ability, whose work will be judged by an esteemed panel including such international experts as curator & writer Susan Bright (2012 Chair of Judges) and Jon Jones, Director of Photography for the Sunday Times Magazine. The winner of the L’Iris d’Or/ Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year Award will receive $25,000 (USD) and the overall Open Competition winner, $5,000. All category winners will also be presented with Sony’s latest digital imaging products.

World Photo, London 2012 and Sony World Photography Awards

For a second year running the hugely successful  World Photo, London and Sony World Photography Awards exhibitions will be held at Somerset House in London in April – May 2012.  Produced by the World Photography Organisation, these events were previously held in Cannes from 2007-2010 and in 2011 the festival and its awards programme moved to London.  Billed as the global photographic event of the year, World Photo, London, and the Sony World Photography Awards, celebrates the very best in photography from around the world, from the next generation of emerging photographers through to the established masters of the art.

The opening weekend of World Photo, London will be held at Somerset House from 27 – 30 April with selected festival events and the Sony World Photography Awards winners exhibitions, continuing through to 20 May 2012.  The annual Sony World Photography Awards ceremony and gala dinner will take place on 26 April at the Hilton Hotel in London’s Park Lane.  The Festival will include a wide-ranging programme of events, talks, seminars, workshops and exhibitions; honorary Judges for the 2012 Awards and other international industry experts will also be participating in the Festival events. These include esteemed writer and photo critic Susan Bright, chair of the Awards; James Reid, Photography Director of Wallpaper*; Michael Benson, Director, Prix Pictet and Claudia Hinterseer, MD and co-owner of NOOR, an international photo agency and foundation.

01 June 2011: The World Photography Organisation (WPO) today opens entries for the Sony World Photography Awards 2012.

The Sony World Photography Awards is the world’s most comprehensive photography competition. It includes a Professional competition, which invites entries from the world’s leading photographers and ‘serious enthusiasts’, and an Open competition for everyone with an interest in photography. Each competition has been refreshed with new categories for 2012. A ‘Nature & Wildlife’ category has been introduced to the Professional competition and three new categories in the Open competition include ‘Enhanced’, ‘Split Second’ and ‘Low- light’.   • Argentinean photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg wins the coveted L’Iris D’Or Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year 2011
  • Chan Kwok Hung announced as overall Open winner
  • Professional category winners and Student Focus Award winner revealed
  • Bruce Davidson receives the Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award

Argentinean photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg has tonight, 27 April 2011, been announced as this year’s winner of the illustrious L’Iris D’Or, the 2011 Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year. Over 105,000 images were entered into the 2011 competition from 162 countries. Chaskielberg was presented with the award during the Sony World Photography Awards Gala ceremony at the Odeon Leicester Square. Previously held at Cannes’ prestigious Palais des Festivals, this is the first year that the awards have been held in London.

London’s biggest ever festival of photography opens at Somerset House on 26 April. Following stops in San Francisco, Sao Paulo and Shanghai, the World Photography Festival comes to London for the first time and will run until 1 May. The Sony World Photography Awards Winners’ Showcase and Bruce Davidson exhibitions will be on display until 22 May. A private press preview of these exhibitions will take place on Tuesday 26 April at 12noon.

Beating competition from over 51,000 submissions from 148 counties, the winners are:
