What’s In A [LEICA] Lens Name?

Thu January 13, 2011

Leica SUMMICRON-M 35 mm f/2 ASPH.

Leica SUMMICRON-M 35 mm f/2 ASPH.

The LEICA name is synonymous with uncompromising quality, especially where lenses are concerned. But what’s in a name? Ken Rockwell has an interesting article where he explores and explains all those strange sounding Leica lens names such as SUMMICRON, SUMMARIT and ELMARIT — and tells you which ones are the best.

Sony SLT-A55

Sony SLT-A55

Image quality is poor, because the A55 lacks some very important image adjustments.

We’ve added a new Sony Alpha SLT-A55 [QuickPrice Check] Review to our Reviews Matrix.

KenRockwell has just published their review of the Sony SLT-A55, a Digital Interchangeable Lens (DIL) camera with a 16.2MP APS HD CMOS sensor, electronic viewfinder (1.15M-dot), articulated 3.0-in. LCD (912k-dot), Continuous Shooting at 10fps, built-in GPS, and 1080p AVCHD movie. The fixed translucent (semi-transparent) mirror allows full-time Live View and full-time Phase-detection AF even when recording HD movies.

Nikon D3100 Review @ KenRockwell

Thu September 30, 2010

Nikon D3100

Nikon D3100

I’d get a D3100 instead of other bigger, heavier and more expensive cameras unless you have a very clear, stated reason that the D3100 won’t work for you.

We’ve added another Nikon D3100 [Specs] review to our Reviews Matrix.

Ken Rockwell has published his review of the Nikon D3100, an entry-level Family digital SLR camera with 14.2MP (APS-C CMOS), PASM, Guide Mode, Scene Modes, Scene Auto Selector, Active D-Lighting, 11-point AF, 3.0-in. LCD (230K dots), RAW, Live View, and Full HD 1920 x 1080 @ 24 fps.

Canon EOS 7D Review @ Ken Rockwell

Wed August 4, 2010

Canon EOS 7D

Canon EOS 7D

For action in reasonable light, the 7D is an awesome camera.

We’ve added a new Canon EOS 7D [Specs] review to our Reviews Matrix.

Ken Rockwell has posted their review of the Canon EOS 7D, an APS-C DSLR camera targeted to serious photographers and Canon’s answer to Nikon’s popular D300. The Canon EOS 7D is positioned just below the full-frame EOS 5D Mark II, has 19MP resolution, Continuous Shooting at 8fps, and Full HD Video capture at 1920 x 1080 resolution with selectable frame rates of 24p, 25p or 30p. “Though the image quality is not quite up to the standard of the $2,600 full-frame EOS 5D Mark II … the Canon 7D [is] a great choice for low light shooting.”
