The coming iBattle between Sony and Apple

Sat March 6, 2010

A battle is brewing with Sony publicly throwing down the gauntlet. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Sony’s CFO Nobuyuki Oneda announced Sony’s intention to take on Apple’s iPad. “We are confident we have the skills to create a [great] product,” said Oneda. The new Sony iPad challenger — as well as a new smartphone to compete with the iPhone– are planned for later this year, which tells us that they are probably already developed and may be currently in testing.

Sony used to be known as the company that was driven by innovation, but has faltered these past few years while Apple has introduced products with wide mass appeal one after another. Other companies have tried to take on Apple but their second rate copycats have not made a dent. Can Sony take on Apple with really innovative products? This should be very interesting.

Mamiya Announces Leaf Capture Remote iPhone App

Mon December 21, 2009

Leaf Remote Capture for iphone

The Leaf Capture Remote iPhone app permits real-time, on-set remote viewing of medium format images for the new Mamiya DM system, enabling instant feedback on any shot. This effectively transforms an Apple iPhone® or iPod® Touch into a remote image viewer.

What is intersting about htis app is that while the photographer is shooting in a tethered mode, other people on set – the creative director, client, stylist, etc. – can watch via a standard Wi-Fi network, without hindering the movement of the photographer or crowding around one monitor. The images display high resolution and the software allows viewers to pan and zoom using the iPhone or iPod Touch.

iPhone DSLR Remote App

Thu May 21, 2009

DSLR Remote on the iPhone

DSLR Remote on the iPhone

What can’t you do with an iPhone? It seems like the whole world is coming to iPhone — and we love it!

Now, onOne Software wants to turn your iPhone into a Remote Controller. Dubbed the DSLR Remote, the iPhone app basically makes your iPhone act as a wireless cable release for your Canon EOS DSLR camera.

There will be 2 versions of the app: a “Lite” version that only fires the shutter will be priced at $1.99, and a Professional version that allows you to also control settings such as shutter speed, aperture and white balance, and is priced at a whopping $19.99 (introductory price of $9.99).

If your camera (only Canon DSLR for now) has Live View, you can even get a live stream of the camera’s viewfinder on your iPhone! Cool!

A gotcha: the camera still needs to be tethered to a laptop. Bummer! But I guess this is unavoidable until Canon DSLRs start to incorporate a wireless device inside.

There is a cool DSLR Remote video that shows the app in use at a basketball shoot. Are they crazy? Hanging a Canon DSLR above a basketball hoop and then have someone shoot a basketball at the camera? ;o)

$0.99 guys — at $0.99, it’ll sell like hotcakes.
