Ricoh GXR P10 Review @TrustedReviews

Ricoh GXR

Ricoh GXR

Disappointing image quality shown by the test unit, as well as the unreliable autofocus system mean that the GXR isn’t much competition.

TrustedReviews has posted their review of the Ricoh GXR P10, an “interchangeable unit camera system” that swaps both the lens and associated image sensor as an integrated unit. The P10 unit features 10MP (1/2.3-in. back-illuminated CMOS image sensor), 10.7x (28-300mm equiv.) optical zoom, and f/3.5-5.6 lens. The camera has a 3.0-in. high resolution (920,000 dots) LCD.

[The Ricoh GXR/S10] produces compact camera image quality.

We’ve added a new review of the Ricoh GXR [QuickPrice Check] to our Reviews Matrix.

DPReview has posted their review of the Ricoh GXR, an “interchangeable unit camera system” that swaps both the lens and associated image sensor as an integrated unit. There are a number of units available and each unit is, for all practical purposes, a different camera. DPReview reviews the S10 which has a 24-72mm (35mm equiv.) F2.5-4.4 VC optical zoom lens with a 10M (1/1.7-in.) CCD sensor, sensor-shift image stabilization, and PASM modes. The camera has a 3.0-in. high resolution (920,000 dots) LCD.

Is DIL The Future of DSLRs?

Tue March 16, 2010

The use of a large sensor in compact digicams is the long awaited next step in the evolution of digital cameras and we are starting to see this happening. Interestingly — but not surprisingly — this push is being championed by companies who are relatively new players in the camera business.

Of the Big 5 manufacturers of 35mm film cameras (Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Pentax and Minolta), two have changed owners (Minolta merged with Konica, resulting in a new brand, Konica Minolta, which is itself now under the Sony brand; Pentax was sold to HOYA).

As digital cameras started becoming more electronic products than optical products, it was therefore not surprising that the major electronics companies jumped into the fray and started their own digital camera divisions.

The Big 5 digital camera players (as far as DSLRs are concerned) are now: Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Olympus and Sony. Other players include: Fujifilm (a major player in compact digicams but not so far in the DSLR / DIL arena), Pentax (though there is some real concern about HOYA’s commitment to its long term survival), Leica (too restricted and too expensive models that only appeal to a few), Ricoh (going the wrong way with Interchangeable Units concept), Kodak (not a player in the DSLR / DIL arena) and Casio (not a player in the DSLR / DIL arena).

Ricoh Should Rethink the GXR Concept

Thu March 11, 2010

Ricoh GXR

Ricoh GXR

At CP+, Ricoh is showing its GXR Interchangeable Unit concept and also a couple of weird units, the first with a Leica lens and external optical viewfinder attached (no hint of interchangeability since we don’t see a lens mount) and a second one with a unit attached to the back of a Hasselblad.

It seems more to us that these look like a DIY that a fan might do to a unit once it becomes obsolete.

After seeing the unit with the Leica lens attached, it seems to us that a rethink of the GXR concept may be in order. Instead of units with non-interchangeable lenses, Ricoh should create units with different lens mount, one with a Nikon lens mount, one with a Canon lens mount, one with a 4/3 lens mount, etc. Now, that would be different and probably sell like hot cakes. You read it here first!
