CSCs vs DSLRs: Who’s Winning?

Mon February 24, 2014

An Amateur Photographer article raises interesting points concerning the future of Compact System Cameras (CSCs). Based on UK data only, the CSCs sold 46,000 units less this year than last year, 100,000 vs 146,000 units. However, the conclusion seems to be that more education is needed to help North American and European consumers understand the advantages of the CSC over a traditional-mirrored DSLR.

This reminds me of the early days of the Apple Mac, which business people then considered a “toy.” When I recommended one to a new university student, he got back to me a couple of months later a bit miffed that he could not download all the popular software that his friends could on their IBM and clone PCs. Today, too, there are more accessories for the traditional-mirrored DSLR than the mirrorless DSLRs.

Oh, how times have changed! Today, Apple products rule while the PCs are retreating. The CSCs are also approaching that tipping point when one product will have such compelling technology in it that traditional-mirrored DSLR just can’t have, and then the moat will be breached.

As our latest Fujifilm X-T1 review shows, the CSC (aka mirrorless DSLR) has come a long way to challenge the traditional-mirrored DSLR.

There is no doubt in my mind that CSCs, in its current form or another form, will win. As camera technology moves forward, there is simply no compelling reason — or room — for a mirror anymore, so new cameras won’t have a mirror.

*For a digital single lens mirrorless camera as of February 7, 2014.

Panasonic is proud to introduce an ultimate photo/video hybrid Digital Single Lens Mirrorless(DSLM) camera DMC-GH4 for the successor of DMC-GH3 that created an industrial sensation with its outstanding video recording performance. The image quality for both photo and video is dramatically improved by crystallizing Panasonic’s cutting-edge technologies.

The newly developed 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor for DMC-GH4 excels both in sensitivity and response and suppresses rolling shutter effect even when using electronic shutter or recording motion image. The image processor Venus Engine is also newly developed dramatically boosting its performance with new quad-core CPU that lets high speed signal processing required for rich video recording such as 4K. Integrating superior noise reduction systems, DMC-GH4 enables shooting at max.ISO25600. Sensitivity, gradation performance, resolution and color reproduction are dramatically improved to achieve even higher picture quality. The DMC-GH4 boasts high speed burst shooting at 12 fps(AFS) up to approx.40 (including RAW) / approx.100 (excluding RAW) and 7.0 fps(AFC) to capture fast moving subject just in-focus.

The new DMC-GH4 further evolves to bridge the gap of consumer video camera and professional video camera. One of the most prominent advance is unlimited*1 4K video recording (Cinema 4K: 4096×2160 / 24 fps and QFHD 4K: 3840×2160 / up to 30 fps) in MOV/MP4*2. The DMC-GH4 is also capable of recording Full- HD video with ultra high bitrate at 200 Mbps (ALL-Intra) or 100 Mbps (IPB) without recording time limit *1*2. Users can freely choose the format from MOV, MP4, AVCHD Progressive and AVCHD at a variety of frame rates according to the usage. For the global business of professional users, the system frequency can be flexibly selectable between 59.94Hz (23.98Hz) / 50.00Hz / 24.00Hz. The DMC-GH4 is also capable of real-time image output to the external monitor via an optional micro HDMI cable simultaneously while recording video. For more unique video expression, VFR(Variable Frame Rate) or Time Lapse/Stop Motion Animation can be produced with DMC-GH4 without postproduction process. In addition, a variety of practical functions required for professional video recording are newly integrated.

The Samsung SMART CAMERA NX30 is Samsung’s flagship mirrorless camera, featuring a 20.3MP APS-C CMOS Sensor (23.5 mm x 15.7 mm) with Hybrid AF that combines 105 Phase detection AF and 247 Contrast-detect AF for lightning-fast and accurate autofocusing.

The NX30 ticks almost all the features enthusiasts look for and adds one more that you may not even have thought of: an XGA (2.36M-dot) EVF that conveniently tilts 80° up. A Proximity eye-sensor automatically switches the display from the AMOLED screen to the EVF when you bring your eye up to the viewfinder, and back to the AMOLED screen when you move your eye away from the viewfinder.

A top shutter speed of 1/8000 sec. allows freezing fast-moving subjects and capturing the decisive moment in action photography as well as allowing the use of a large aperture in bright daylight to obtain shallow depth of field bokeh effects. Continuous Shooting is at 9fps with autofocus.

The Samsung NX30 is brimming with Wi-Fi capabilities, including Embedded NFC (Near Field Communication) and Wi-Fi to allow you to send pictures to your smartphone or tablet by simply touching the camera to the device.

Shoot Full HD 1080 / 60p video with stereo sound with a 3.5pi microphone. A standard 3.5 mm microphone jack allows the use of an external microphone. The Smart Range+ feature automatically gives tonal detail a boost, so shadows are a little brighter, and highlights are a little darker. Dual IS features both optical and electronic image stabilization. HDMI interface connects your camera to your HDTV.

Features advanced photographers will appreciate: RAW file support, PASM shooting modes (with full shutter speed range available), manual zoom ring, manual focus ring (fly-by-wire), and a iFn feature that turns the focus ring into a Function ring.

You won’t have to suffer through a cheap image viewer and editor here: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 is bundled free with your NX30.

The Samsung NX30 retails (street prices) for CAD $ 969 / US $799 / £652 with the 18-55mm OIS III kit lens. Check latest prices / Buy
