Using flash can seem like a mysterious and complicated affair, but it does not need to be. Indeed, I have been recommending that with if you are new to DSLRs that with your new purchase that you should also get an external flash with it, if you don’t own one yet. A bounce flash, more precisely. A bounce flash is simply one with a swivelling flash head that allows you to direct the light in different directions, the most common being up at a white ceiling.

Digital Camera Review has a basic tutorial on the why and how of using an external flash to simulate natural light indoors. Believe me, if you want quality indoor shots, a bounce flash will be your best investment.
