Tue February 11, 2014

Canon U.S.A. Introduces the PowerShot G1 X Mark II Digital Camera Featuring Enhanced Optics, Wireless Connectivity and Creative Shooting Options for Professionals and Photo Enthusiasts

Canon’s Latest G-series Digital Camera Features a New Type of 1.5-Inch CMOS Sensor, 5x Zoom Lens, Wi-Fi® and NFC™ Capabilities, Full HD and A Three-Inch Touch Tilt LCD Screen

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 11, 2014 – Building upon the success of the PowerShot G1 X digital camera, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today unveiled its new flagship PowerShot G1 X Mark II, a digital camera designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s professional and advanced amateur photographers.

Boasting a sensor that is 4.5x larger than a 1/1.7″ sensor found in professional level point-and-shoot cameras, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera can produce high-quality images with a wide dynamic range. It features a new type of 1.5-inch, 12.8 megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor, made by Canon, allowing for optimum performance with an ISO range of 100-12800. This sensor, combined with the DIGIC 6 Image Processor, comprises the Canon HS SYSTEM resulting in faster autofocusing speeds over the PowerShot G1 X camera, allowing photographers to capture detailed, vivid images even in low-light conditions.

Featuring a newly-developed f/2.0 – f/3.9, 5x optical zoom lens (equivalent 24-120mm zoom range) with Dual Control Rings, this new camera provides customized zooming and focus-functionality similar to a DSLR camera. This gives more control and creative possibilities when using a PowerShot camera. The Dual Control Rings include a Step Ring to adjust various customizable settings and a Continuous Ring to make focusing adjustments during manual focus, as well as additional customizable settings for manual shooting. The new lens also features a nine-blade aperture to provide beautiful, blurred backgrounds even at full-zoom range.

“The new high-end PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera delivers incredible, professional-level shooting capabilities in a compact camera body making it the ideal second camera for DSLR shooters,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “In addition, with the introduction of advanced wireless capabilities such as NFC and enhanced low-light shooting and autofocusing, the G1 X Mark II is a well-rounded professional-level camera that allows photographers to get creative.”

Canon Inc. Ranks First Among Japanese Companies in U.S. Patent Rankings: 2005 – 2013

Wed January 15, 2014

This video presents “Canon Visual Overview to Communicate, Share, and Connect.”

  • This high-definition quality video introduces Canon’s global business activities centering on imaging technology and various other activities, which include research and development to production, sales, marketing, environmental conservation, and social contributions.

It is announced today that Canon Inc. again ranked first among Japanese companies and third overall for the number of U.S. patents awarded in 2013.

Here are some of Canon’s new frontiers for image processing.

  • Developing Texture-Acquisition Technology to acquire detailed photo-subject information.
    • Canon is working on making texture acquisition possible through image processing.

“When realized, such technology would provide digital cameras and other consumer devices with texture-acquisition capabilities.”

  • Developing Photorealistic CG (Computer Graphics) Technology to reconstruct realistic images from analytical data.

Such image processing requires technology that captures and recreates light rays and texture-acquisition technology that provides information about a subject’s appearance, along with photorealistic CG technology capable of reconstructing highly detailed images based on texture information……Canon’s photorealistic CG technology is also effective in synthesizing photographic and CG images, enabling the smooth synthesis of photographic and CG images automatically, doing away with the troublesome process of manually manipulating each frame in order to achieve realistic results. The technology has the potential to easily create revolutionary composite images for major motion pictures, advertisements and other projects.

  • Merging IT (Information Technology) – from the world of cyber technology – and RT (Real-World Technology) – from Canon’s areas of technological expertise in interfacing with the real world, including the company’s texture-acquisition and photorealistic CG technologies.

    • Canon will develop applied technologies enabling the future expansion of the following four business domains:
      1. imaging and information,
      2. safety and security,
      3. health and healthcare,
      4. industrial machinery and intelligent robots.
        • Canon is also focusing on the development of sophisticated intelligent robots.
        • An intelligent robot comprises three basic elements:
          1. vision (sense of sight = real technology) to recognize its real world surroundings;
            • Since 2005, Canon researchers have been working on the development of robotic eyes and Super Machine Vision, conducting research into machine vision technology through the application of optical, image-capture and recognition technologies.
          2. intelligence (cyber technology) “to think and act on its own accord”; and
          3. movement (real technology) to carry out actions.

Canon Teases

Sat November 9, 2013

Not to be outdone by Nikon et al., it is now Canon‘s turn to tease us with a camera that is covered with a cloth. Could it be an SL2? If this is just an upgrade to the SL1 or EOS M, that will probably annoy most people. No reason for a mysterious intro here. It certainly does not look “retro” so forget about a Canon DF. I can only think of one camera: a mirrorless version of the SL1 (aka, upgrade of the EOS M). After all, all you have to do is take the EOS M, add a hump to it to make it look DSLR-like and you are now a more or less serious player in the mirrorless DSLR category.
