EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X. Internal extender switch lever is located between the Canon label and the lens mount section (right-hand side) as shown above.

Canon EF200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x is the world’s first interchangeable super-telephoto zoom lens (for use with EOS cameras) to employ an internal extender. This super-telephoto zoom lens is designed for sports and wildlife photographers.

  • With the simple flick of a switch, the internal extender enables the lens’s focal length range to be increased from 1x to 1.4x – a capability that normally would require the attachment of an external extender – thus eliminating the risk of dust or moisture entering the lens or camera during lens changes.
  • “IS” stands for Image Stabilizer.
  • “USM” stands for Ultrasonic Motor.
    • Ultrasonic motor (USM) for fast, quiet autofocus.

Canon LEGRIA mini X video camcorder (VIXIA mini X in the Americas and iVIS mini X in Japan) features a simple, compact body design that is small enough to fit in the palm of a hand.

  • The camcorder employs a wide-angle lens delivering widespread coverage even when shooting at close range, and includes a built-in stand.

Canon Contributes to Production of Primary Mirror for the Thirty Meter Telescope, a Next-Generation Extremely Large Telescope

Thu November 13, 2014

The following video presents Thirty Meter Telescope.

The core of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) Observatory will be a wide-field, alt-az Ritchey-Chretien telescope with a 492 segment, 30 meter diameter primary mirror, a fully active secondary mirror and an articulated tertiary mirror. The optical beam of this telescope will feed a constellation of adaptive optics (AO) systems and science instruments mounted on large Nasmyth platforms surrounding the telescope azimuth structure. These platforms will be large enough to support at least eight different AO/instrument combinations (depending on exact volume and mass parameters) covering a broad range of spatial and spectral resolution. To support and maintain these technical systems, a comprehensive set of support facilities is included in the basic observatory design.

TMT will couple unprecedented light collection area (almost 10 times more than one of the Keck telescopes) with diffraction-limited spatial resolution that exceeds Keck by a factor of 3. Relative to the Hubble Space Telescope (arguably the most revolutionary astronomical instrument of our generation), TMT will have 144 times the collecting area and more than a factor of 10 better spatial resolution at near-infrared and longer wavelengths.

http://www.tmt.org/observatory

Construction of the telescope began in 2014 with completion scheduled for the early 2020s.

  • Japan will handle the processing of approximately 30% of the 492 segments (574 when including replacement segments) that make up the TMT’s primary mirror.
  • Of the processing being handled by the team from Japan, Canon is currently responsible for grinding 26 segments and has already begun work.

To produce the segments, Canon is drawing on its various optical technologies cultivated through the manufacture of lenses and mirrors, namely grinding and polishing technologies, aspherical surface processing technologies, and measuring technologies.

  • In particular, Canon will make use of its proprietary tools when grinding and polishing the aspherical surfaces to ensure the proper curvature required for each segment.

Canon technologies contribute to production of primary mirror used in TMT extremely large telescope

TOKYO, November 13, 2014—Canon Inc. announced today that the Company has been entrusted with the responsibility of processing the 30-meter-diameter multi-segment primary mirror to be incorporated in the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) currently under construction near the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii.

Conceptual image of the completed TMT (courtesy of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan)

Conceptual image of the completed TMT (courtesy of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan)

The creation of the TMT, a next-generation extremely large telescope, is being made possible through the cooperative efforts of Japan and four other countries. Construction of the telescope began in 2014 with completion scheduled for the early 2020s. Japan will handle the processing of approximately 30% of the 492 segments (574 when including replacement segments) that make up the TMT’s primary mirror. Of the processing being handled by the team from Japan, Canon is currently responsible for grinding 26 segments and has already begun work.

The TMT’s primary mirror will comprise an array of 492 hexagonal segments, each of which measures 1.44 meters diagonally with a thickness of 45 millimeters. The segments will be closely arranged, separated by gaps measuring only 2.5 millimeters wide, to create the 30-meter-diameter primary mirror. The primary mirror’s construction requires the production of six each (seven when including replacement segments) of the 82 uniquely shaped segments used to create the mirror.

The processing work that Canon is responsible for requires that segments be processed at a level of precision measuring less than 2 microns Peak-to-Valley (P-V), a value that indicates differences in surface levels. This degree of precision is comparable to a variation in the surface evenness of the playing field housed in the Tokyo Dome sports stadium of less than 0.2 millimeters. To produce the segments, Canon is drawing on its various optical technologies cultivated through the manufacture of lenses and mirrors, namely grinding and polishing technologies, aspherical surface processing technologies, and measuring technologies. In particular, Canon will make use of its proprietary tools when grinding and polishing the aspherical surfaces to ensure the proper curvature required for each segment.

Canon to develop new Large Sensor Zoom Camera

Mon September 22, 2014

Canon has posted an interesting aside on its Hong Kong press release:

New PowerShot Digital Compact Camera Under Development
Featuring large image sensor, high zoom capability and compact body

Canon is developing a new premium digital compact camera that combines the merits of both large image sensor and high-magnification optical zoom lens in response to the demands from users looking for high quality high zoom performance. Offering both convenience from a compact body and excellent super telephoto performance, this camera is perfect for everyday or travel shooting in high quality.

The question is, what qualifies as “large image sensor” when talking about travel zoom cameras (as seem to be implied in the press release)? Anything less than 1-in. image sensor will not cut it. Any aperture less than F2.8 will fall short of its competition. That said, we welcome any “high quality” development in this segment of the market.
