The
#1 complaint we constantly hear from digital camera
enthusiasts has to be the poor low-light focus
ability of most digital cameras. Save for one:
the Sony F717's infra-red laser hologram AF allows
precise focus even in total darkness. Well, good
news! The new Sony DSC-V1 Cyber-shot incorporates
features borrowed from the hugely popular F717,
including its low-light hologram AF assist (yeah!).
Whereas other digital cameras also has low-light
focus-assist AF (better a little than none), only
the Sony 'Hologram AF' works practically foolproof,
thus removing the low-light focusing complaint.
The
Sony DSC-V1 has 5 megapixels resolution, a Carl
Zeiss Vario Sonnar 4x optical zoom, maximum aperture
of F2.8, shutter speed range from 1/8 - 1/2,000
sec. (30 - 1/1,000 sec. in Manual mode), and 3.9
in. macro. Exposure control includes Shutter-Priority
and Aperture-Priority modes, plus 8 Scene Modes
(Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Portrait, Landscape,
Beach, Snow, Fireworks, Fast Shutter). The one
biggest selling point for the V1 will no doubt
be its low-light capability that far surpasses
that of all other digital cameras in this category.
Other
notable features are a hot shoe to allow the use
of external flash (with TTL flash metering) and
a very cool program shift function. The program
shift function allows you to shift the exposure
in Program AE up or down equivalent exposure settings
by simply rotating the jog dial. This allows you
to maintain proper exposure but select a larger
aperture/smaller shutter or faster shutter/smaller
aperture.
With
its 5 megapixels resolution, 4x optical zoom,
flexible exposure control, and infrared laser
hologram, the Sony DSC-V1 Cyber-shot seems like
THE perfect digital camera for the serious amateur
photographer. We award it our OriGenial
Seal of Approval for excellence in camera
design and richness of features.
