Prosumer - Advanced Amateur
The Sony DSC-R1 Cyber-shot is the first
prosumer digital camera to use a large APS-sized
image sensor (21.5 x 14.4 mm) that allows the
use of high ISOs, up to ISO 3200. It has 10.3MP
resolution and features a pro-quality Carl Zeiss
Vario Tessar 5x wide-angle optical zoom (24 -
120 mm, 35 mm equivalent) with T* coatings. The
maximum aperture is F2.8 and the minimum aperture
goes all the way down to F16. The lens accepts
filters with a diameter of 67mm. On the lens barrel,
there is a real manual zoom ring and a "fly-by-wire"
manual focus ring.
Exposure control includes Program shift, Shutter-Priority
(49-step shutter speeds from 30-1/2,000 sec.)
and Aperture-Priority (16 Step, f2.8 - f16) modes.
Images can be saved in the RAW file format.

The large 2.0 in. LCD monitor (resolution 134K
pixels) is situated on top of the camera, and
can be rotated and swivelled at different angles.
An automatic eye sensor switches the view from
LCD to the viewfinder when you put your eye to
the viewfinder. The LCD also gives a live preview
-- up to now "not technically feasible"
due to the power consumption of large image sensors.
Grid lines, zebra stripes (to indicate over/under-
exposed areas), a histogram, and full-time exposure
indication of aperture, shutter speed and Exposure
Value over/under can be displayed on both the
electronic viewfinder and LCD monitor.
The Sony R1 has a hot shoe (situated on top
of the handgrip) for using the optional high power
Sony HVL-F32X external flash. It accepts both
the Memory Stick and CompactFlash (CF) cards,
including the Microdrive. Note that, similar to
dSLRs, there is no movie mode.
Other features: Preview LCD mode provides a live
DOF view; metal tripod socket aligned with the
center line of the lens; optional Wide (0.8x)
and Tele (1.7x) Conversion lenses; optional macro
lens, ND filter, and Polarizing filter.
The Sony DSC-R1 Cyber-shot will appeal
to advanced amateur photographers desiring a non-dSLR
digital camera with low noise at high ISOs.
