After using the Samsung SyncMaster BX2350 we are not sure if we can go back to using our old monitors! There is a vivid difference in the picture quality of this LED screen compared to the displays from the traditional CRT and LCD monitors we normally use. Not only is the 23″ Samsung SyncMaster BX2350 monitor stylishly good looking with its glossy black finish bezel and elegant chromium-plated V-type stand, but power it on and prepare to be even more impressed by the display!
IMAGE QUALITY
The Samsung SyncMaster BX2350 is a 23″ LED backlit 16:9 widescreen monitor with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and a dynamic contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1 with a response time of 2ms.
We are very impressed by the bright, clear, sharp, rich and vivid images it displays. Watching movies (or just browsing the Internet) on it is pure delight. The contrast is amazing, with cleaner whites and darker blacks. Websites which use to appear dull suddenly become lively in color.
One issue we often encounter with traditional LCD monitors is their limited viewing angle. The Samsung series 50 monitor uses a feature called MagicAngle to allow a wider viewing angle.
It has 6 modes:
- Lean Back (2 modes)
- Standing
- Side
- Group
- Custom
Use the appropriate mode to adjust the brightness and contrast and to optimize the viewing angle depending on where your audience is situated in relation to the monitor.
Set to Lean Back mode 2, the image is the brightest. It looks washed out if you look straight at the screen. However if you lean back (and hence the name of the setting) and look at it from the bottom, it appears more contrasty.
Set to Standing mode, the display brightness is subdued.
We view the monitor at different angles in the different modes and find that the different settings do help but, regardless of which settings we use, as long as we do not exceed 45° from the center, the image generally remains bright and crisp. As we stray further from the center, the image starts to darken.
The viewing angle is much better than with other LCD monitors and several people can watch the same monitor without discerning a loss in image quality. This is great if you have to demonstrate something on the monitor to a group of people standing behind or besides you.
SET UP
Setting up the Samsung SyncMaster BX2350 is very easy and it takes only a few minutes to assemble. It comes with its own power adapter and has 2 HDMI connections apart from the conventional D-Sub. So you can connect it to a Blu-Ray DVD or HD camcorder to obtain the highest quality image.
To make adjustments on the screen, you activate the touch controls at the bottom right of the screen. It can require some getting used to at first but they are quite simple once you have done it a number of times. We recommend using your thumb to activate the touch controls.
The screen dimensions are approx. 55 cm (21.8″) Width, approx. 35 cm (13.7″) Height (without stand) and 1.9 cm (0.8″) Depth. It weighs approx. 3.7 kg (8.2 lbs).
ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Energy consumption of the monitor is relatively low compared to other types of screens. It consumes 26 W (Stand By < 0.3 W), which is about 40% less power than conventional CCFL monitors. It is also rated as eco-friendly as it does not contain halogen or lead.
If you leave the monitor on most of the time, this can lead to significant savings for a company with a large number of monitors. Even for home usage, the amount of power saved can conceivably help bring your electricity bill down in the long term.
A MagicEco feature allows you to set your monitor brightness to 75% or 50% to further reduce the amount of energy used. We find the 50% setting to be a bit too dark. The 75% setting is quite acceptable and approximates other monitors’ brightness.
Another nifty feature is the MagicReturn which, if you use 2 monitors simultaneously, manages your dual-monitor content and shifts all content to one monitor if the other one is switched off.
CONCLUSIONS
The Samsung SyncMaster BX2350 provides one of the best quality display we have ever seen in a monitor. The images are detailed, bright, crisp and the colors are bold. An added benefit is that it consumes relatively little power.
If you spend a lot of time in front of a monitor (and who doesn’t these days?) and want to upgrade your viewing pleasure experience, we highly recommend the Samsung SyncMaster BX2350 monitor as an excellent choice.
