EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 Review is based on a production model. All sample images are unretouched, except where specified.

Hybrid photography. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 sets the bar a bit higher in the enthusiast Interchangeable Lens Camera segment. It is vying to be the hybrid camera of choice for enthusiast photographer who mixes still, video and audio to showcase his and her best work in print and online.

The DMC-GX7 ticks off all three aspects of hybrid photography with a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera that is chokeful of features for still photography and offering Full HD 1920×1080/60p high quality video recording in AVCHD Progressive and MP4 with stereo sound.

In addition, the inclusion of Wi-Fi and NFC (Near Field Communication) technology allows you to connect the GX7 with your smartphone or tablet for easy picture sharing and transfer.

The availability of 20+ Panasonic and Leica branded lenses that range from an 8mm Fisheye to a 100-300mm Telephoto Zoom with prime, macro and even a 3D lens in between gives the photographer the flexibility to find the right lens for the job. The addition of in-body image stabilizer means that all other non-IS micro Four Thirds lenses and other lenses that can be attached using the appropriate adapter now also gain the image stabilization advantage.

It is amazing how many desirable features Panasonic has succeeded in squeezing into the compact Lumix DMC-GX7, the successor to the GX1. When it was introduced, there was a lot of excitement among enthusiast photographers whether it would simply be a minor upgrade to the GX1 or whether it would be a worthy competitor to current compact mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Well, the GX7 proved to be the latter and, in our opinion, skips to the front of the line.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 is an ideal compact mirrorless interchangeable lens camera for enthusiast photographers. It’s compact, light and fast with superior image performance. Highly recommended.

Which firmware version was used for this review?
Final version V.1.x or preproduction < V.1.0?

Thanks for the review and your feedback

Rob,

Since there was no firmware updates on their site, I did not bother to even check the camera’s firmware version [but I should have]. It is usually obvious if a camera is pre-production (packaging, etc. and besides the company will tell you and ask that you do not publish pictures or make a judgment based on a pre-production model). But I will check with the company since I don’t have the camera anymore with me, and publish it here.

Well, I was in contact with Panasonic Canada and they said Firmware 3.0.
