Back
when the top two major camera manufacturers were
dueling it out with their respective top SLRs,
Pentax quietly introduced the Spotmatic F.
The simplicity of the design, the quality of the
Takumar lenses, and the affordable price quickly
convinced a whole new generation of rangefinder
camera users to switch to this elegant SLR. Pentax's
name became synonymous with quality at an affordable
price.
Pentax
also introduced a series of ads designed to foster
this 'affordable quality' image. I remember one
ad in particular that caught my attention: it
was a simple one page ad in a photo magazine which
showed a battered Spotmatic F. The copy line at
the bottom explained that this camera was in a
disaster and when retrieved, found to still be
working! It was truly a 'picture worth a thousand
words' ad that inedibly seared Pentax's brand
in my mind.
[Editor's
note: If anyone still remembers this ad, could
you please drop me a line.
I wouldn't mind getting a scan of the ad, if possible.]
Pentax
has introduced some really innovative digital
cameras, starting with the Optio S (the 'digital
camera that fits into a tin of Altoids mint').
