  • In 1939 the owners of Upton House moved out and their family-owned bank moved in. Driven by the need to protect bank staff and assets from the London air raids, M. Samuel & Co., moved in for the duration of the Second World War.
  • You will be able to step back in time to see how the bank staff lived and worked in their new surroundings.
  • There will be office desks and typewriters in the Long Gallery, just as there were in the 1940s, alongside the world class paintings and porcelain collection.
  • “The property will be opening new rooms, enhancing the gardens and exploring what happened when ordinary people took over this extraordinary place.”

Panasonic’s display technologies and ultra-short-throw lens – large-scale projections from a very short distance – will add interactivity, atmosphere and movement to the new exhibition at Upton House.

Panasonic's ultra-short-throw lens ET-DLE030 enables large-screen projection from a very short distance. By mounting the ET-DLE030 ultra-short-throw lens onto Panasonic's 1-chip DLP™ projector, you can shorten the projection distance by approximately 60 % compared with Panasonic's short throw lenses. This huge savings in space lets you project images in spots where you previously could not—such as places where the ceiling is too high, or where there is not enough front or rear space for projecting.

Banking for Victory!! Brought to life through Panasonic technology

upton-house-600

Panasonic has provided high resolution projection and display technologies that add interactivity, atmosphere and movement to the new exhibition at Upton House. By bringing the story to life, Panasonic technology is helping visitors to imagine what it would have been like to live and work at the wartime bank.

Panasonic technology is used to evoke the feelings of those hearing Neville Chamberlain’s pronouncement that Britain was at war with Germany. Thanks to Panasonic’s ultra-short-throw lens, large-scale projections will light up the dining room ceiling from a very short distance.

Back projection through the mothballed fabric of Lady Bearsted’s four-poster bed adds atmosphere to her wartime story, and this technique is also used to animate the story of Lord Bearsted’s work in the Special Operations Executive.

In the long gallery an interactive touch screen will bring to life the stories of what M. Samuel & Co was doing for the war effort. And it’s also Panasonic projection and display technology that powers the wartime cinema.
