The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 comes the
closest to a DSLR-like experience with its excellent
handling, smooth manual zoom ring, well-implemented
Front and Rear Dials, and its many customization
features.
It has fast performance with 2 sec. startup and
no practical shutter lag. The 12x optical zoom
lens is superb with no lens extension and an effective
optical image stabilization. A large 2.0-in. Free-angle
LCD flips out and rotates for comfortable above
your head and low-angle shooting.
Image quality is very good to excellent at ISO
100, with low noise and images retaining most
of the details. At higher ISOs, images suffer
from noise and loss of detail.
If you like full manual control, the FZ50 is
a delight to use. Manual Focus is also performed
using a ring around the lens barrel with the EVF
image enlarged for easy focusing. Frequently used
settings can be saved. In auto focus mode, Selectable
AF Area makes focusing on off-center subjects
easy.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 will appeal
to advanced amateur photographers desiring a digital
camera with superb DSLR-like handling and controls
and excellent image quality at ISO 100.
