The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 features a wide-angle 18x optical zoom (27-486mm equiv.) that should allow capturing
more of a scene (or group shot) than standard
35mm lens is capable of as well as bring far subjects near. The SLR-type body houses a 10.1-MP resolution 1/2.33-in. CCD.
The LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens is optically image stabilized, has a maximum F2.8 aperture at wide and F4.4 at tele, and allows close-ups at 1cm.
Panasonic has a new two-step noise reduction that separates high-frequency noise from low-frequency noise and applies noise reduction only to low frequency noise. It also has a new process to prevent color bleeding when reducing chromatic noise. Panasonic claims that its new noise reduction technology results in lower noise at high ISOs.
For more advanced photographers: PASM modes for full exposure flexibility; a customizable Function (FN) button and 2 Custom Mode settings; a 2-axis adjustment feature allows a finer white balance adjustment for Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, and Halogen conditions; Flash Synchro from 1st Curtain Sync. or 2nd Curtain Sync.; Selectable AF Spot and Selectable AF Area allows you to move the AF frame for off-center focus; a Minimum Shutter Speed function allows you to specify the minimum shutter speed to use; shoot in RAW and develop them using the new SILKYPIX® Developer Studio 3.0SE.
Advanced Intelligent AUTO (iA) mode turns on MEGA O.I.S. (to compensate for blurring caused by camera shake), Intelligent ISO (automatically adjusts ISO and shutter speed to freeze subject motion), Face Detection (optimizes focus and exposure settings to properly expose the subject's face), Intelligent Scene Selector (automatically sets the most appropriate Scene Mode), and Intelligent Exposure (to maintain detail in highlights while brightening shadow areas, including raising ISO sensitivity only in the low-lit areas) for a beginner's point-and-shoot ease of use. iA now also includes AF Tracking where the camera automatically keeps your moving subject in focus, and Auto Backlight Compensation.
The Lumix
DMC-FZ28 has a large 2.7-in. (230K dots) LCD and an EVF with 201,600-dot resolution. The Intelligent LCD automatically increases the backlight brightness in bright sunlight according to the ambient light intensity and automatically adjusts the frame rate ("gains up") in dimly lit conditions according to the ambient darkness to ensure that you can always see what you are shooting.
There are lots of Scene Modes, including new Pin Hole Mode and Film Grain Mode allow you to capture pictures reminiscent of high-sensitivity film. A handy Leveling feature in Playback mode allows you to correct for straight horizons and architectural buildings. A Multi Exposure function lets you take up to three exposures in a single frame.
Fun features allow you to stamp your pictures with date and text on a copy of the original picture. Optional accessories include Tele Conversion Lens (826 mm equiv.), Close-up Lens, ND Filter, and Polaroid Filter.
The FZ28 can record motion images in high-definition (1,280 x 720 pixels at 30 fps), full-size movies in WVGA (848 x 480 pixels at 30 fps), and standard motion images in VGA (640 x 480 pixels at 30 fps) and QVGA (320 x 240 pixels at 30/10 fps).
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 is an ultra zoom digital camera with full exposure flexibility, wide-angle coverage, fast operation and a wealth of advanced features sure to please the proverbial point-and-shoot "soccer mom" as well as more demanding photographers.
