The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX580 features 12.1MP (on a 1/2.33-in. CCD image sensor), 5x ultra wide-angle optical zoom (25-125mm equiv.), Optical Image Stabilization, and a 3.0-in. touch screen LCD (230K dots) in an elegant aluminum body.
Advanced Intelligent AUTO (iA) mode turns on MEGA O.I.S. (to compensate for blurring caused by camera shake), Intelligent ISO (automatically adjusts ISO and shutter speed to freeze subject motion), Face Detection (optimizes focus and exposure settings to properly expose the subject's face), Intelligent Scene Selector (automatically sets the most appropriate Scene Mode), Intelligent Exposure (to maintain detail in highlights while brightening shadow areas, including raising ISO sensitivity only in the low-lit areas) for a beginner's point-and-shoot ease of use, and AF Tracking (where the camera automatically keeps your moving subject in focus).
New is Face Recognition that identifies an individual face and gives AF and AE priority to that person in a group. Likewise, the Advanced Touch AF/AE allows you to just "point out" the subject by touching the LCD, and the camera will adjust the focus and exposure for that subject. This touch operation also works in iA mode.
For those wanting to learn about controls, PASM modes allows full exposure flexibility with a shutter speed range from 60 to 1/2000 sec., easily set by touching the slider bars by the LCD. Other touch functionality includes setting white balance, repositioning vertical and horizontal guide lines, and easy playback.
Unlike most cameras with touch screen that do away with buttons, the FX580 keeps the important buttons so if you do not fancy the touch screen, you are still in control.
The Lumix
DMC-FX580 has a large 3.0-in. (230K dots) LCD with wide viewing angle. The Intelligent LCD automatically increases the backlight brightness in bright sunlight according to the ambient light intensity and automatically adjusts the frame rate ("gains up") in dimly lit conditions according to the ambient darkness to ensure that you can always see what you are shooting.
The FX580 can record HD Movie 1,280 x 720 pixels @ 30 fps. The 60 sec. shutter speed allows for nice Night Shots, and the 5cm close up focusing should allow for macro shots.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX580 is packed full of practical features and targets point-and-shoot as well as beginner photographers desiring a simple-to-use digital camera with full exposure flexibility.
