The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX500 features an ultra wide-angle 5x optical zoom (25-125mm equiv.) that should allow capturing
more of a scene (or group shot) than standard
35mm lens is capable of. The sleek, super-slim body houses a 10.1MP resolution 1/2.33-in. CCD.
Advanced Intelligent AUTO (iA) mode turns on MEGA O.I.S. (to compensate for blurring caused by camera shake), Intelligent ISO (automatically adjusts ISO and shutter speed to freeze subject motion), Face Detection (optimizes focus and exposure settings to properly expose the subject's face), Intelligent Scene Selector (automatically sets the most appropriate Scene Mode), and Intelligent Exposure (to maintain detail in highlights while brightening shadow areas, including raising ISO sensitivity only in the low-lit areas) for a beginner's point-and-shoot ease of use. iA now also includes AF Tracking where the camera automatically keeps your moving subject in focus.
For more advanced photographers, PASM modes allows full exposure flexibility with a shutter speed range from 60 to 1/2000 sec.
The Lumix
DMC-FX500 has a large 3.0-in. (230K dots) LCD with wide viewing angle. The Intelligent LCD automatically increases the backlight brightness in bright sunlight according to the ambient light intensity and automatically adjusts the frame rate ("gains up") in dimly lit conditions according to the ambient darkness to ensure that you can always see what you are shooting.

New is a touch screen functionality that provides easy AF/AE and manual exposure control. A hybrid operation system combines the new touch-screen interface and the conventional operation system with joystick or button for quick and intuitive control. For example, directly control basic menu settings by the joystick or button, and finely adjust AF or AE point by touch or by moving a slider on the screen with the finger or an included stylus-pen.
Panasonic has a new two-step noise reduction that separates high-frequency noise from low-frequency noise and applies noise reduction only to low frequency noise. It also has a new process to prevent color bleeding when reducing chromatic noise. Panasonic claims that its new noise reduction technology results in lower noise at high ISOs.
The FX500 can record motion images in high-definition (1,280 x 720 pixels at 30 fps), full-size movies in WVGA (848 x 480 pixels at 30 fps), and standard motion images in VGA (640 x 480 pixels at 30 fps) and QVGA (320 x 240 pixels at 30/10 fps).
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX500 is packed full of practical features and targets point-and-shoot as well as serious photographers desiring a simple-to-use digital camera with full exposure flexibility.
