The Olympus Stylus 1030 SW is "the toughest point-and-shoot camera in the world." The new shockproof, waterproof, freezeproof, crushproof and dustproof Stylus 1030 SW is even more durable than its predecessor (Stylus 770 SW) and improves on it in a number of ways.
If you've ever dropped a digital camera or bumped it against a hard object, you will appreciate that the Stylus 1030 SW can now withstand a drop from 2 metres (6.6 feet, versus from 5 feet for the 770 SW) with its shock-absorbing technology, which minimizes the impact on the lens and circuitry. Its crushproof body can also withstand up to 220 pounds of crushing pressure, so you can safely stow it into your backpack.
You don't have to leave your digital camera behind now when going snorkeling, scuba diving, spending a day at the beach or in the pool. Interior rubber gaskets and O-ring seals allow the Stylus 1030 SW to be fully submerged to down to 10 metres (33 feet) underwater. Four preset Underwater Scene Modes automate exposure. Record movies with the underwater movie mode. The lens features a water-repellant coating to prevent water droplets from forming on the lens when you step out of the water.
If you want to go deeper and stay underwater longer, the optional PT-043 underwater housing enables you to take pictures as deep as 40 metres (130 feet).
If your photography takes you to the icy slopes and snow-covered territories, you can still safely take the Stylus 1030 SW with you since it is freeze-proof down to well below freezing (-10 degrees Celsius). You will probably quit before the 1030 SW does!
The airtight construction makes the Stylus 1030 SW impervious to dust, dirt and other particles: ideal for recording images in dusty and sandy environments. When the camera gets dirty, just rinse it off.
Olympus claims that its new HyperCrystal II LCD screen reproduces true colours with a dynamic contrast ratio of more than 180 percent and a colour reproduction performance of more than 160 percent compared to its previous HyperCrystal LCD.
A new 3.6x wide-angle zoom (28-102mm, 35mm equiv.) is perfect for capturing large groups and wide landscapes and easier to capture a shot in underwater photography.
Face Detection tracks faces within the frame and automatically focuses (Face Detection AF) and optimizes exposure (Face Detection AE) for the face.
The Stylus 1030 SW features Digital Image Stabilization (DIS) which boosts the camera’s ISO sensitivity and shutter speed allowing it to freeze the action and provides blur-free images, even when you or your subject is moving.
Another new feature is In-camera panorama mode which captures three images and stitches them together to create one panoramic picture. All you have to do is simply press the shutter button and slowly pan across the scene; the second and third images will be captured automatically and stitched together with the first image – resulting in one seamless panorama-size picture. To create the ultimate panoramic picture, the Olympus Master Software 2 allows you to stitch up to 10 images together.
Shadow Adjustment Technology compensates for extreme contrast where the shadow areas are underexposed and lack visible detail.
Perfect Shot Preview mode enables you to preview and select various photographic effects on a live, multi-window screen before snapping the shot.
A LED Illuminator works like a mini-flashlight on the front of the camera to enhance focus and exposure for macro shooting – great for underwater close-ups where light is scarce. The LED also works in conjunction with Bright Capture to help illuminate your subject when taking low-light portraits.
The Stylus 1030 Sw uses the xD-Picture Card. New is an adapter that allows the digital camera to also use microSD memory cards.
