The Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II boasts a wide array of shooting features including the 50 Megapixel High-Res Shot Mode for high-resolution images.

  • This unique Olympus technology is a benefit for any still life photographer or anyone who requires ultrafine detail reproduction.

The OM-D E-M1 Mark II’s 50M High Res Shot shifts the sensor by half of a pixel as it shoots 8 images and composites them into a single image equivalent to a 50-megapixel photo. But you can actually create an 80M-equivalent image, if you use Olympus Viewer 3 Ver. 2.0 on a 64-bit OS.

In the images below, on the left is a standard 20M shot, and on the right is the 80M High Res Shot. The framed areas in the top image have been enlarged in the bottom image…. see the difference in detail in the red circles. Keep in mind how much the images have been enlarged.

High Res Shot is useful when you want to capture fine detail, such as when shooting paintings, art pieces, small pieces of jewelry, precision gears as in a watch, or miniature models and figures.

Here’s how to create an 80M High Res Shot. From the super control panel, set the drive mode to High Res Shot and set the format to 50M F + RAW. Release the shutter and three files will be saved: a 50M JPEG, a 80M RAW (ORF), and a 20M RAW (ORI). Open the 80M RAW file in Olympus Viewer 3 and click on Export, which will develop it into a 80M JPEG file.

When using High Res Shot, make sure you use a tripod. Aperture can be set from maximum to f/8, shutter speed can be set from 1/8000 sec. to 60 sec., and ISO can be set from ISO LOW to 1600.
