Olympus EVOLT E-510

Mouseover image for back view

Category: Advanced Amateur - Prosumer

The Olympus EVOLT E-510 DSLR replaces the E-500 and has three of the most sought-after features on a digital camera:

  1. 10MP Live MOS Image Sensor that permits live composition of the picture on the 2.5-in. Live View LCD. With a high 230,000 pixels resolution, high contrast image and wide viewing angle, the LCD is bright and clear from any angle.
  2. CCD-shift Mechanical Image Stabilization (IS) that compensates for camera shake. Digital Image Stabilization compensates for subject movement. Since the IS is based on the Imager, it is available with any of the more than 30 digital-specific lenses available for the Four Thirds Standard.
  3. Dust Reduction System using Olympus' exclusive Supersonic Wave Filter™. This patented ultrasonic technology vibrates to remove dust and other particles from the front of the image sensor every time you turn on the camera.

The EVOLT E-510 has 28 shooting modes and provides full exposure flexibility for the advanced photographers as well as 18 Scene Modes for beginner photographers. It has dual memory card slots and accepts the xD-Picture Card and CompactFlash Type I & II (including Microdrives) cards.

A new kit lens is available for the EVOLT E-510: a light and compact Zuiko Digital ED 14 - 42 mm f3.5 - f5.6 Lens (28 - 84mm, 35mm equivalent) which weighs just 7.5 ounces. Close-ups as near as 9.84 inches (0.25 m) are possible throughout the zoom range.

Being part of the Olympus E-System, the EVOLT E-510 is compatible with the large and growing range of Olympus E-System accessories, including the full line-up of Zuiko Digital Specific lenses and flashes.

The Olympus EVOLT E-510 has joined a select group of DSLRs that are pointing the way to the future of digital imaging. Though other competitors have Dust Reduction System and Image Stabilization, only the Olympus has had a Live View LCD in its DSLRs for some time now. [Panasonic and Leica use the same Live MOS Sensor. Only the newly introduced Canon EOS 1D Mark III has a similar Live View.] This combination of features should make the E-510 a favourite of advanced and beginner photographers alike.

If you are looking for a digital camera for first-time users (and without Image Stabilization), check out the EVOLT E-410.

If you want to compare with the Panasonic equivalent, check out the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L10 DSLR.
