Updated
for a very demanding group, the Nikon Coolpix
5400 boasts a set of features not found in many
other digital cameras in that configuration. It
has a number of interesting improvements over
the Coolpix 5000 that it replaces.
First, it retains the wide-angle at 28mm (35mm
equivalent) but now zooms to a pleasant portrait
focal length of 116 mm. Since most pictures I
take are either of landscapes or portraits, I
personally prefer these zoom focal lengths instead
of, say, 35-140mm. I therefore find that the Coolpix
5400 zoom lens is ideal in a compact digital camera.
The Coolpix 5400 is setting a new standard in
zoom focal lengths that other camera manufacturers
will probably follow.
Other
notable improvements over the Coolpix 5000:
-
5 megapixels resolution;
- the
addition of 15 Scene Modes to automatically
record images in various popular shooting situations
such as portraits, panoramas, and landscapes;
-
bulb is now extended to 10 min.;
- 5
shot buffer;
-
macro is now at 1 cm/0.4 in. (twice closer than
in the 5000)
Whereas
the Coolpix 5000 was basically a professional
photographer's camera requiring a good understanding
of exposure control, the 5400's scene modes now
allow beginner amateurs to start easy. The long
10 min. bulb should allow for interesting night
shots. The 5-shot buffer allows capture of the
'decisive moment.' An incredible macro at 1 cm
further advances Nikon's well deserved reputation
for providing the best macro capabilities in the
industry. The swivel LCD makes macro photography
very convenient. Advanced photographers have aperture
priority, shutter priority and fully manual modes
for total creative control.
In
its specifications, the Nikon Coolpix 5400 comes
close to the 'perfect' compact camera. We would
have liked to see an AF assist light similar to
that on the Coolpix SQ, and a larger maximum aperture.
The Nikon Coolpix 5400 should appeal to advanced
amateur photographers.
