Nikon Coolpix S60 Review

Review Date: February 9, 2009

Nikon Coolpix S60
Mouseover image for back view

Category: Point-and-Shoot

The Nikon Coolpix S60 has 10MP resolution, a 5x optical Zoom-Nikkor lens (33-165mm equiv.) with sensor-shift VR Image Stabilization and an extra large 3.5 in. (230K pixels) LCD monitor with wide viewing angle.

The Coolpix S60 is slim and has clean lines, a solid feel and an all-metal body that easily slips into a pocket. There are no control buttons on the back. Instead you use the touch panel LCD to set all the camera controls.

New Touch Autofocus and Auto Exposure lets you touch the subject on the LCD screen that you want to focus on and the camera automatically sets the focus, exposure and tracks the subject ensuring sharp focus and optimal exposure.

Sensor-shift VR Image Stabilization automatically detects and compensates for small camera movements that would otherwise cause images to blur. The result is sharper pictures when shooting in low light. VR also allows you to take advantage of slower shutter speeds (similar to shooting at shutter speeds two to three stops faster).

Nikon's innovative D-Lighting function compensates for underexposed images or insufficient flash by automatically adding light and detail to selected shots where needed -- without affecting properly exposed areas. Nikon's In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically fixes most typical occurrences of red-eye. Face-Priority AF automatically finds and focuses on faces to ensure clear, crisp focus on people's faces.

Scene Auto Selector automatically recognizes the scene in your picture and adjusts the camera setting. Smile Shutter and Blink Warning makes sure you’ll always catch the decisive moment when your subject smiles. Blink warning will let you know when your subject’s eyes are closed so you can retake your picture.

The Nikon Coolpix S60 should appeal to point-and-shoot amateur photographers who desire a stylish and slim carry-anywhere digital camera with touch screen controls.

Available colors [country dependent]: Espresso Black, Arctic White, Burgundy, Champagne Pink, Platinum Bronze and Crimson Red.
