EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This Nikon Coolpix S60 Review is based on a production model. All sample images are unretouched, except where specified.

If you like the idea of a touch screen, then Nikon Coolpix S60 should appeal to you. It is an ultra-compact point-and-shoot digital camera in a sleek and stylish all-metal body with a 3.5-in. touch panel LCD. There are only two traditional buttons: Power and Shutter Release; everything else is accessed by touching, tapping, sliding and flicking your finger on the LCD screen. Though it's not as slick as an iPhone, the S60's touch screen is still lots of fun once you get used to the touch controls.
The Coolpix S60 gives its best results when the light is good, producing good image quality with good detail at ISO 64. As is common with point-and-shoot cameras, higher ISOs are visibly noisy.
Point-and-Shoot models do not usually provide the photographer much control, but the Coolpix S60 offers a number of practical features besides Program Auto and easy-to-use Scene Modes:
- Sensor-shift VR Image Stabilization to reduce effects of camera shake.
- 5x optical zoom, no lens extension.
- Preset (manual) WB -- for accurate color reproduction in artificial lighting situations.
- Touch AF Area -- select where the camera focuses by simply tapping anywhere on the screen; great for off-centre subjects, especially in macro photography.
- Best Shot Selector -- camera selects the sharpest out of 10 shots.
- Manual ISO -- in bright daylight, use the lowest ISO for the best image quality.
- D-Lighting to brighten up shadows.
Movie mode is 640x480 pixels
30fps, with sound.
The Nikon Coolpix S60 will appeal to those looking for a stylish and easy to use ultra compact digital camera that features a touch panel LCD. There is currently a wow-factor associated with touch screens and the S60 has it.
