The Nikon Coolpix S230 has 10MP resolution, a 3x optical Zoom-Nikkor lens (35-105mm equiv.), clean lines and is perhaps the prettiest of the Nikon Coolpix series. It is slim enough to easily slip into a pocket.

The extra large 3.0 in. high-resolution (230K pixels) LCD monitor is a touch panel and allows you to operate it using your finger or a supplied stylus. Tap to select options and drag to scroll through pictures in Playback. Tap on the screen to select where you want the camera to focus on.

The S230 lacks mechanical image stabilization but uses electronic vibration reduction to adjust the ISO and shutter speed to help reduce blur due to camera shake and subject motion.

Nikon's D-Lighting function compensates for underexposed images or insufficient flash by automatically adding light and detail to selected shots where needed -- without affecting properly exposed areas. Face-Priority AF automatically finds and focuses on the subject's face to ensure clear, crisp focus on people's face. Smile Mode automatically releases the shutter when your subject smiles. The camera will detect the subject's smile and will automatically fire the shutter.

Motion Detection automatically detects moving subjects and adjusts shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for camera shake and subject movement.

The Nikon Coolpix S230 should appeal to point-and-shoot beginner photographers who desire a stylish and slim carry-anywhere digital camera.

For about US $80 less, the Nikon S220 features a 2.5-in. LCD (150K dots) and lacks the touch panel feature.
