EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This Nikon Coolpix S1000pj Review is based on a production model. All sample images are unretouched, except where specified.

David Duncan Observatory
The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj is the world's first point-and-shoot digital camera with a unique built-in projector. It is a handsome ultra compact digital camera that easily slips into a Jeans pocket or a small fashion purse. Handling is good and the controls and menu are intuitive to use. It produces average to good image quality and, as is common with point-and-shoot cameras, higher ISOs are visibly noisy.
Though P&S models do not usually provide the photographer much control, photographers will appreciate that, besides Program Auto and easy-to-use Scene Modes, the Coolpix S1000pj also offers the following practical features:
- Optical VR Image Stabilization to reduce effects of camera shake.
- 5x wide-angle optical zoom (28-140mm equiv.) captures wide landscapes and pleasing portraits.
- Preset (manual) WB -- for accurate color reproduction in artificial lighting situations.
- AF Area -- select where camera focuses from 99 focus areas; great for off-centre subjects, especially in macro photography.
- Scene Auto Selector recognizes the scene in your picture and automatically adjusts camera settings.
- Best Shot Selector -- camera selects the sharpest out of 10 shots.
- Fixed range auto ISO -- 80-200 and 80-400.
- D-Lighting to brighten up shadows.
The LCD is large at 2.7 in. with 230,000
dots resolution and a wide viewing angle. Movie mode is 640x480 pixels
30fps, with sound.
The main attraction in this camera is the built-in projector. It is surprisingly easy to use and works relatively well as long as you stay within its parameters: it can throw an image up to 2 m for an image size of 40 in. Both still images and movies can be projected. It won't bowl over your business colleagues but the small built-in projector adds a new dimension to sharing your pictures with family and friends without having to connect to a TV (no messy wires) or first downloading to a PC (no waiting). Just put it on the included stand, point to a (preferably) flat white surface, and press the projector button for instant fun. There is even a Remote Control that controls the camera both in Shooting and Playback modes.
The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj is well designed and intuitive to operate so anyone can use it. The beginner will appreciate the point-and-shoot ease of use as well as the practical features that help obtain well-exposed pictures in challenging situations. Now with a built-in projector!
