Photoxels Editor's Choice Award - Serious Enthusiast DSLR

This Nikon D90 Review is based on a production model. All sample images are unretouched, except where specified.

The Nikon D90 DSLR is a dream enthusiast DSLR. You can expect exceptional performance, one of the best large, bright and clear optical viewfinder on a DSLR using an APS-sized image sensor, and excellent image quality with low noise up to ISO 800.

The D90's claim-to-fame is that it is the first DSLR with movie capability. It can record 1,280 x 720 pixels 720p HD movie at 24fps with monaural sound. Because the D90 takes interchangeable lenses, this opens up the ability to shoot videos with very shallow depth of field (subject in focus, background pleasantly out of focus) -- something that is almost impossible to do on a compact non-DSLR digicam.

The 3.0-inch LCD monitor is very high resolution at at 920K dots and Live View provides Contrast-detect AF which, though much slower than Phase detection AF, is nevertheless precise even in low-light situations.

The build quality is excellent and the handling is superb with a large and deep handgrip and enough space for all your fingers to hold on to. Controls are precise and intuitive, with instant power on. The D90 is very responsive and gives a feeling of confidence that it can tackle any challenges the photographer faces.

Positioned between the pro-level D300 and the "Family DSLR" D60, the Nikon D90 provides total exposure flexibility for the serious photographer. It provides a high degree of customization, programmable FUNC button, retouching features and even a built-in wireless flash commander.

The Nikon D90 is easily the ideal Digital SLR for the enthusiast amateur photographer looking for an affordable DLSR without sacrificing any of the important features.
