At Edwards Garden
This past Sunday, while hurrying through Edwards
Garden taking sample images for the Sony Cyber-shot
P100, I had to stop in my tracks and watch for
a few minutes as the artist carefully and patiently
applied colour after colour and brought her canvas
to life. I thought to myself a bit smugly (for
just a tiny instant) that I could capture the
same image with just a click of the shutter release
button... but watching her working away contentedly,
I had to admit that she seemed to be the one having
the more fun. And for a moment, while standing
there, thoughts of megapixels, metering options,
and other digital imaging issues left my mind,
and I took time to really look at the garden,
and the bridge, and the rocks, and the birds,
and the people.... Thank you for letting me watch
you paint.

Pentax
*ist DS
In our regular reporting of the newest digital
cameras, we may quickly post the latest press
release about the new Pentax digital SLR, the
Pentax *ist DS without mentioning what
is really significant about this. What is significant,
and exciting, about the *ist DS for digital cameras
in general is that its smaller compact size is
not much larger (and in some cases, smaller!)
than the prosumer models. With a lens, it is a
bit larger and weighs a bit heavier, but the price
is becoming very competitive. And, the *ist DS
is still able to deliver 6.1 megapixels resolution
on a 23.5x15.7mm CCD image sensor. We can only
welcome this development of more compact dSLRs
with their high quality image sensors -- and watch
with anticipation to see if the prosumer models
rise up to the challenge by incorporating larger
image sensors. Pentax has fired the first salvo
-- and the other camera manufacturers will follow.

Sony may be redefining the meaning of digital
zoom with a new technology that doesn't zoom the

FLORIDA, USA
Hope all goes well for our readers and the residents
in Florida tonight, and you can all come back
to your (undamaged) homes! We also need to seriously
start thinking of building our houses out of solid
bricks (not just the decorative stuff) -- as the
three little pigs found out when the wolf huffed
and puffed and could not blow the third little
pig's house down.

Epson
Stylus C-86 Inkjet Printer
A dedicated photo printer is usually best for
printing your photographs. But what if you only
print the occasional photos? An all-purpose text
and photo printer may be the answer. We take a
look at the Epson Stylus C-86 Inkjet Printer.
It prints black text fast -- at up to 22ppm; a
4x6 in. photo using Best Photo mode in about 2
min.; and has individual ink cartridges. The latter
feature means that you replace only the ink cartridge
that runs out of ink. [ Read more in our Epson
